My GGGrandfather Andrew Robinson was born in Ireland in 1820 according to his death records. He emigrated to Montreal, Canada and died on February 24th 1872. Some of the Montreal census results show him being born as early as 1817.

He married Christian McLaren born in Scotland in 1814 and died in Montreal, Canada on April 14, 1893. She has been referred to as Christine and Christina in found documents.

I can not find any reference to their Marriage in Canada and all documents give the country of birth only.

They had three children, Elizabeth, John and Jessie.

I assume that he came from the Ulster area but as the Robinson surname is the 15th most popular surname in the UK, I am not too hopefull of finding him there.

Also buried in the Robinson Family plot at Mount Royal Cemetary in Montreal are  Elizabeth Robinson Briggs (1873) William French McLaren (1882) Christina McLaren Robinson (1893) Arthur Wallace Maxwell (1896) Ernest Howard McIntosh (1906) Jessie McIntosh nee R. (1910)

  • Hi thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

It would really make it much easier for you to find information on Andrew if you could find a placename that narrows down what part of Ireland to search in.

Do you know much about his emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at  this could be a good place to find more information. -and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

A website which may help when looking in to immigration into Canada is the Library and Archives of Canada. If you follow this link, it will bring you to the relevant section:

Once you have the name of a parish, or even a village or town, you will be able to look for information on Andrew in Church records (if there are any available), and the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two: the Tithe Applotment Books (182-1838) and the Griffith's Valuation (1848-1864) You can search this land records online at the following websites:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites which may help you in your search are the follwoing:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope this helps. I know that it can be hard to find information, but remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
