Hi, I am trying to find out where in Ireland my ancestors have come from.  I have limited information, as most of my family is no longer living and/or has no interest in geneology.  McNee comes from my father's father.  Callanan is from my mother's father.  Any information would be extremely helpful.  Thank you.  Lyn McNee

  • Hi Lyn,

Can you give some approximate years of births and deaths and fiirst names to narrow it down a bit as these are common surnames.

Names of spouses would also be useful.

  • Sure, I can't go very far back, but I'll give it a go!  My great grandfather on my dad's side was Robert McNee.  Born September 1862 or 1863 in Braeside Ontario Canada.  He died August 1955 or 1956 in the state of Washington, USA.  Robert's parents were James and Jessie (or Nellie) Brown McNee.  Unfortunately, I have no dates on them.  They reportedly died when Robert was 13 years of age.

In 1997, while at a celtic fair, I purchased a computer generated history on the surname McNee.  Quite frankly, it read like a form letter with a few bits of info plugged in.  However, it did state that McNee was first found in county Down.  In addition, the name was associated with Clan MacGregor in Scotland. The history concluded that there was no coat of arms registered.  In some of my own reading, I've also found my name connected with county Limerick.  It's all rather confusing!

As far as for Callanan, I think I may be able to get a little information, but it may take a day or two.  Thanks again.

  • OK thanks Lyn.

I've done quite a bit of searching with mixed results.

I  couldn't find any Irish marriages of McNee - Callahan or McNee - Brown.

I tried to attach a record from ancestry of the 1930 U S Census which has Robert McKee. His father's birthplace is Scotland so perhaps we're barking up the wrong tree Lyn!?

I also found the 1871 Canadian Census which has Robert and his brother James who is 10 years older.

Their religion is Presbyterean - Scottish.

Robert and Norah's marriage record is attached as is the Family Search Community Tree.

Sorry the 1930 census page won't attach.
