Catherine Ryan ,Refadda, Tipperary , third  great grandmother had a female sibling, possibly Bridget Ryan that married a Carr and emigrated with her sister, Catherine, husband John Ryan ( Tobacco) and three children, Patrick, Mary and Jeremiah to the US just prior to the Famine. I have a great paper trail of Catherine Ryan and family, minus husband, in Galena, Illinois in 1850 Census and later to nearby Benton, Wisconsin.. Found a Bridget Carr and John Carr in 1844 ship manifest in New Orleans. I have strong Carr DNA matches. Parents of Catherine Ryan were Margaret Kinane from Upper Church married to Patrick Ryan, Glenpadden. Margaret Kinane Ryan died in 1861 in Borrisoleigh. I have a lot of information on Catherine’s other siblings and their descendants. Catherine Ryan’s grandparent’s were Peter Kinane 1748-1804, I have a tombstone picture in Glenkeen Cemetery married to Kitty Ryan. Thanks.

  • HI again, the Bridget Ryan and John Carr I posted the marriage for were in Ireland as late as 1872.  Roots Ireland shows they had many children, including a Patrick and a Margaret.

  • Thanks, Patricia this does sound plausible, however, supposedly this couple is in the United States prior to 1850. What would verify that is baptism and marriage record of her sister, Catherine Ryan born around 1818 or youngest brother, John Ryan who died in Curaghloss and married to Mary Ryan of Knockbrittas. They had a Patrick Ryan borrn September1, 1857 in Borrisoleigh and died 1940 same location. Thanks!

  • Patrick Ryan and Margaret Kinnane also had a daughter Mary, baptized in 1822 (as per RootsIreland).

You ask what would prove that the Bridget Ryan I found is your ancestor's sister.  With the evidence I have, I can't say for sure that it is the correct person. But circumstantial evidence seems to say that it certainly may be the correct Bridget: age, place, parents' names, husband's name.

Are you sure the 1844 Bridget and John Carr belong to your family? The Bridget I found did not marry until 1857.
