Allegedly Thomas and John Vickery were shipwrecked on the coast of Bantry in the 1740’s , some say they were inbound from Antigua, West Indies. Their intended destination I do not know.

Later around 1871 a descendant of theirs another Thomas Vickery (1808 - 1883) established Vickery’s Hotel in New Street, Bantry  It became an important tourist hotel in the area with stabling for over 100 horses until partly destroyed by the IRA in 1921.

I would greatly appreciate any information regarding this particular family, and indeed any other general Vickery date from which I can build a more complete picture.

  • Hello! Here are some information of Thomas and John Vickery. The legend is that the Vickery family of Co. Cork are reputed to be descended from two brothers from the West Indes who were shipwrecked in Bantry Bay in the mid-18th century. Thomas Vickery (1808-1883) was one of this family and married Mary Sullivan. He established a hotel on the site of an old dye works in Bantry c1850 and it continued in business until late 2006 when it was bought by a development consortium.  During the troubles the hotel was burned down and reconstructed with the novelty of a wash hand basin in every room. In 1850 the hotel had 25 bedrooms and it was also the  centre of a coaching establishment.  This linked Bantry to Killarney on the emerging tourist route. Up to 100 horses were kept for this purpose. This is base on  my reaserch on google. Hope this would really help you. By the way please visit us here: buy soundcloud comments

  • Hello Richard: my ggm Mary Stanley Fawcett nee Vickery was a ggd of `Shipwreck'  John Vickery of Bantry. She and her husband Henry John Fawcett settled in Australia in the 1860s. Perhaps I have some information of interest to you. Her brother James also settled in Australia.
