I thought I posted a message here at least a week ago, but I just realized I'd not had any replies. When I looked now, I don't see it in my messages, so I messed up somehow.

Anyway, we are traveling to Ireland this week, and will arrive in Ennis next Saturday, leaving on Monday. My husband is a grandson of John Joseph Carmody (b. 1863), who married Elizabeth Alloway 18 November 1882. They left for Canada (later moving across the river to Michigan) not too long after their marriage. John Joseph's brothers were Michael (b. 1856, d. 1925), who worked at Queen's Hotel for a number of years, and Patrick (b. 1859). They both remained in Ennis, though all of Michael's kids eventually emigrated to the USA. There were some sisters, but I don't know who they married, or whether they remained in Ennis.

This is the Carmody family that descended from Andrew Carmody and Mary Cullinan, and lived in the Borheen. I have not yet made a connection to the Carmodys who lived in other parts of Ennis.

With such a short visit, I did not plan on doing any genealogy research. We are looking to get more of a local "feel" of Ennis, so are looking for suggestions in that vein. Not particularly "touristy" things to do. I hope that makes sense. I appreciate any suggestions.

I apologize for the short notice, but I only just realized the other message I wrote didn't get posted. Thank you in advance!

  • RootsIreland gives the following baptisms for Andrew Carmody and Mary "Culleeny":

    Carmody Mary 1843 Co. Clare
    Carmody Catherine 1845 Co. Clare
    Carmody Mary 1848 Co. Clare
    Carmody Ellen 1850 Co. Clare
    Carmody Ann 1853 Co. Clare
    Carmody Michael 1856 Co. Clare
    Carmody Patrick 1859 Co. Clare
    Carmody John 1862 Co. Clare

At the time of the baptisms of the last four, the family lived in the townland of Borheen in the parish of Ennis. So now you have a place to visit. Good luck.

  • There's a lot of info about the Carmody family here: https://christinesgenealogymusings.wordpress.com/tag/ennis/

I'm not sure if "Borheen" was a townland...it may have been a "boreen," a minor road, in Ennis.

  • Patricia,

Thank you for taking time to look up the records for me. Yes, I've seen those baptism entries. The John at the end is my husband's grandfather (I guess I mistyped the year in my post). I've found Michael and his kids in the 1901 and 1911 census records. I'm still trying to nail down which Patrick Carmody in those census years is ours. I'm pretty sure it's the one with the "Andrew", but haven't really been able to confirm that. There are several within an appropriate window.

The blog you mentioned is the one I write. As near as I can tell, "the Borheen" is the area around Marian Avenue. It's consistent with the Griffiths maps I found, having Andrew as a lessee for various parcesl. So we will take a wander up that direction.

I was sort of hoping for recommendations for a good pub, maybe with music, for Saturday night dinner. Maybe some lesser-known sights we should see. Of course we will see the O'Connell monument, and maybe wander down to the one for Mohammed Ali. And I've printed the booklet from the Cathedral renovation.

We are so looking forward to this trip, which was originally planned for 2020 . . .
