I have recently found out that my 4x great grandmother Ellen Wade was part of the 'Earl Grey Scheme' and was shipped off to Australia in 1850 on "Tippoo Saib" to increase female employment and I have been wanting to know which workhouse that she possibly would've been in and also curious if there is any information on her parents as I have reached a brick wall. I will be grateful for any information like census, baptism, etc...

The only information that I have is:

Name: Ellen (Rose) Wade

Age that she immigrated: 17-19

Birthplace: Bethlehem, Westmeath

Parents: Patrick Wade & Rose (possibly Morrison)

Religion: Catholic

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Ellen (Rose). However, I believe I located baptismal records for five siblings. The RC parish was Tubberclair. Baptismal records for that parish start in August 1829. The mother's maiden name was Morris oe Morrison (one record showed Morrison and the other four showed Morris). The five children were: Catherine 1830 John 1833 Patrick 1835 Thomas 1838 and another Catherine 1841 (which tells me that the 1830 Catherine died young). No townland info was shown on the transcribed records. I did not find a marriage record.

I'm wondering if Ellen was born just before August 1829 and therefore no record was available. She may have fudged her age to qualify for the Earl Grey scheme.

Tubberclair RC parish is just northwest of Athlone so likely if she was in a workhouse it would have been Athlone.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864.

  • There is a website called 'Trevo's Irish famine orphans' and it has a record that has Ellen's baptism as 1834 and she passed away in 1891 at the age of 58, and on the 'Irish Famine Memorial Sydney' website it has that she was 19 years old when she came over to Australia.
