Hi Everyone,

Looking for Anne King and James Walsh and family. It looks like they married in Dublin 1811. There must be more children other than my ancestor Sarah Walsh who came to Australia in 1836 on board the ship "Sir Charles Forbes. I would love to know more about her family in Ireland. I can't find a record of Sarah's birth for parents James and Anne. Could she have taken another name due to her being in Mountjoy Prison and then sent to Australia for stealing boots? Maybe she wasn't born in Dublin. Some  state that she was 16, 18, 20. On her death certificate it states that she was 79 years in 1899. That would make her born 1820

I did find a newspaper article that stated she stole boots along with a person by the name of Mary Anne Downey/Downie. They were both considered Irish Rebels. I think Mary Anne came to Australia on the same ship.

I would be most grateful for any information. I have added a photo of James and Anne/Ann Walsh which must have been sent to Sarah by her parents. Everything I have points to Dublin City.

Regards,

Cheryl Stevens

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

A couple of us had researched your family back in 2017 https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/message-board/cher   We are not seeing any additional information.

If have not done so already, you may want to add Sarah to our XO Chronicles site. https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

  • Thank you Roger you have all been very kind is searching for me. I have found that Sarah Walsh spent time in Mountjoy Prison   12 December 1834 to February 1835 in company with Mary Anne Downey stealing an umbrella and boots before their second offence 1836 which saw them both transported to Australia in 1837. Could there be a site that may hold the records from Mountjoy? Do you think I would find more information like next of kin for instance? What I am trying to do is be 100% sure of Sarah's parents. Hope all are coping in Ireland with the Covid epidemic. We seem to be doing quite well here in Australia but one never knows when the virus can reappear.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Cheryl!

I actually live in the States and we are doing slightly better here compared to Ireland with the percentage of people fully vaccinated.

I don't think there is any additiional info. The gentleman that assisted me (and you) back in 2020 is a Dublin expert and if any info was available, her would have found the information.

Have you tested your DNA? Perhaps you will find matches on your Walsh line.

    All the best to you!

  • Hi Roger, Pleased to hear the rollout of vaccine is going well in your part of the world. I haven't had mine yet, I'm not really keen on the Astrazeneca, we don't have much Pfizer here at the moment.

I am about to do my DNA. My cousin did his but hasn't come in contact with any Walsh family in Ireland. Mary Anne Downey appears to have changed her name as she was known as Bridget Downey on board "The Sir Charles Forbes" but there is a marriage for a Mary Anne Downey on BDM New South Wales. I thought Sarah may have given different names for her parents to try and hide her conviction and transportation. I would really love to be 100% sure of her parents. I am about to do my DNA so will see what it brings. Thank you so much again.

    Stay well and safe,

    Regards
