Hi! I hope I am in the correct message board.

I'm looking for more info on my GG grandparents, Michael Collins and Anne Walsh.

They were married 28 December 1875 in Ballisakeery Church. I have their marriage record. Anne was from a townland called Ballybroony near Crossmolina. They had two daughters in Ireland before coming to America. Maria, born 28 February 1877. Her place of birth is listed as Errew. Agnes Ann was born 1 October 1878 in Erriff, Crossmolina, Mayo. I was told Errew and Erriff are the same place, just different translations.

All 4 of them went to America on the Helvetia ship and arrived in 1880.

I am hoping for more info about Michael and Anne, their parents and siblings in Ireland and hoping to connect with any cousins!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is a link to the civil marriage record for Mchael and Anne  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…;  The record shows that Michael's father was John and Anne's father was Patrick. Michael was from Errew in Crossmolina civil parish and Anne was from Ballybroony in Ballysakeery civil parish.

Civil registration started in 1864 so for Michael and Anne only baptismal records would possibly be available. Both names are very common.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find an Anne Walsh baptismal record with father Patrick in the Ballysakeery RC parish records. I also did not find a Michael Collins baptismal record in Crossmolina RC with father John.

I searched the 1901 census for Errew townland but there were no Collins' families. However, Ballybroony had a number of Walsh families likely some had connections to Anne.

    Have you tested your DNA?

You can also add the story of Michael and Anne to our XO Chronicles site    https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Roger, thank you so much! Yes, I had DNA tested with 23andMe! The civil marriage link you gave me did not work on my end, but I do have their marriage record, I will attach it. Does it match what you found? It looks like there was a "Walsh" witness, maybe a Maria Walsh?

Yes, the same record and Maria is the witness.

  • I'm assuming it was her mother, as I was told she was underage and would need parental consent. Another common name to search for though!
