We are researching my husband's maternal grandparents: Michael Walsh and Margaret McBride, as well as his great grandparents: Thomas Walsh and Bridget unk, and Maurice McBride and Hannah Duffy.
Michael Walsh was born in 1851 in Sligo, son of Thomas Walsh (farmer) and Bridget unk. Michael was appointed to the R.I.C. in April 1871, served in Mayo and Sligo (service #37653), and was pensioned in September 1892. He and Margaret McBride were married in February 1879 in the RC Chapel of Dungloe, Donegal. They had 12 children: Thomas James (1879-), Hannah (1881-1958), Michael Patrick (1881-1958), Margaret Ann (1883-1892), Winifred (1884-1981), Mary Bridget (1886-1953), Ellen (1888-1979), Katherine (1889-1977), Margaret Ann (1896-), Martha (1893-1954), Thomas James (1894-1985), and Sarah Jane (1897-1981). Seven children immigrated to Manhattan, NY during the 1890's and early 1900's. Margaret McBride Walsh immigrated in 1907 with Thomas James and Sarah Jane. Her husband, Michael, and son, Michael Patrick remained in Ireland. The 1911 Mayo, Kilbeagh census lists only Michael, age 60, R.I.C.pensioner. Son Michael Patrick, married in 1919, and died in 1964 in Dublin. We would appreciate any information on Michael Walsh - his mother's maiden name, his exact date and place of birth, names of any siblings, date and place of death and burial.
Margaret McBride was born in 1850 in Dungloe, Donegal to Maurice McBride and Hannah Duffy. She died in May 1942 in Jackson Heights, NY and is buried in Mount St. Mary's Cemetery in Flushing, NY. Names of siblings and any other information would be helpful.
Maurice McBride (merchant) was born in 1823 in Cruit, Dungloe, Donegal and died in September 1908 in Dungloe. He married Hannah Duffy. They had nine children: Margaret (1856-1942, James (1859-1927), Anthony (1863-1942), Bridget (1873-1947, Hannah (1864-1944), Anne (1852-), Mary (-), Roderick (1866-1866), and Maurice (1861-). We are looking for Maurice's parents' names, his marriage date and place, and any siblings.
Hannah Duffy was born in 1827 in Innisfree, Donegal and died March 1899 in Dungloe, Donegal. Any information on her parents' names and siblings would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance for all of your help. We do appreciate any information on these family members.

Julie:
I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for a Michael Walsh baptismal record in Co. Sligo with a father Thomas and mother Bridget and the earliest record located was in 1866. A number of Sligo RC parishes do not have records back to the early 1850s. Unfortunately, the availability of RC church records for Co. Donegal prior to 1850 is extremely limited. The Dungloe records start in 1876.
The story about Michael Sr. staying in Ireland while his wife went to America is unusual. The only record I could locate was his death record.
Last record for 1925 death record for Michael Walsh. Niece was informant. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…
Let me know if you have any questions.

Roger,
Thank you for sending Michael Walsh's death record. Do you know the names of cemeteries in Charlestown/Swinford/Claremorris, Mayo that might have burial information? His daughter, Margaret Ann, died 15 May 1892 at age 9 in Claremorris district; perhaps he is buried with her.
My understanding of why Michael remained in Ireland is that he was to join his wife, Margaret, and family in New York after she and the children were settled. I don't know why that did not happen.
Is there a parish liaison in Mayo, Sligo, and/or Donegal who might have knowledge of these family members or their descendants?
Thanks for all your help.

Julie:
I'm generally familiar with the area around Charlestown. My McDonnells come from Carracastle which is five miles east of the town. There are three possible cemeteries: Charlestown cemetery which is associated with St. James RC church in Charlestown, Carracastle cemetery which is associated with St. James RC church in Carracastle (Yes, there are two St. James's churches within five miles of each other) and finally Temple cemetery which is south of Charlestown on the way to Knock.
The niece to Michael Walsh who was the informant lived in Cloonfane which is down the old N5 road closer to Carracastle so possibly Michael was buried in Carracastle. There is no guarantee that there is a headstone. Many were buried without a marker. My own great-grandparents are buried in Carracastle and they died in 1937 and 1942 and there is no headstone. People did not have a lot of money and a headstone was an expense.
I added a few links. The first is over 100 pictures of headstones in Carracastle and I don't see any for a Michael Walsh. The second link is a Facebook page for Charlestown cemetery. That page tells you to check out there records at irishgraveyards.ie and I did but no Michael Walsh back to 1925. The third link is for a Facebook page for Seamus Bermingham. He has a business in Charlestown and is very knowledgeable about generalogy in the area. He volunteered for us a number of years ago but has been inactive in the last few years. Send him a PM and see if he may have some suggestions.

Roger,
Thank you for all the information on Charlestown and Carracastle; especially the links you provided of the headstones and also of Charlestown Cemetery. It was so kind of you to check all of the photos and the cemetery records. We really appreciate all that you have done. I plan to send a PM to Seamus Bermingham and hope that he may have some additional information on the Walsh family.
I forgot to mention that we have some McDonnell family members in our family tree - I don't know if any of them connect with your McDonnells. Michael Patrick Walsh married Josephine McDonnell (1893-1990) in 1919 In Galway. She was born in Swinford, County Mayo, the daughter of Robert McDonnell (1853-) and Susanna Tuohy (1861-). Josephine's nieces, Helen and Susan McDonnell, are daughters of Vincent McDonnell (1898-1968) and Helen Mary Gilmartin (1897-1938), Sligo.

Hello John,
I live across the country in California. We moved here from New York in the late 50's.
I have a number of photos of the Walsh family, including ones of Michael, Jr., Hannah, Nina, Kate, Sr. Austin, Sally and Mary Bridget. Also, one of Margaret McBride Walsh taken in 1930. If you don't have any of these, I will have copies made for you.
Unfortunately, I don't have a lot on your grandmother, Martha. I do have a copy of her N.Y. State Petition for Naturalization and a 1940 U.S. census transcription.
It's great to have someone else researching this family. Let me know what I can help you with.

I have a few photos from Sister Austin and Kate Walsh naturalization papers and birth certificate from Claremorris I couldn’t scan them so I took a few pictures with my phone. Would you like to me to text them to you or email? I do recall my Mom telling me about a relative moving to California and I do have a picture of a woman who I believe is her cousin in California probable taken in the 50’s I could be wrong but I believe they reconnected when the internet first came around in the 90’s John.

Hi John!
I just found your posts of April 6th and 7th. IRO usually emails me with a "New reply has been added" message, but the last notification I received was on March 29th. Luckily, I decided to check the posts today.
I have a number of Walsh birth and death certificates. Aunt Sal's naturalization papers, a write-up on Sr. Austin when she received the St. Thomas Aquinas President's award in 1967, and many other things that might be helpful to you.
Would you prefer to communicate privately? I am reluctant to post my email, address and phone number on line, and you probably are also, but I would like to be able to mail some things to you. If you are in contact with Bill Currao in Connecticut (son of Rita Shields and Bill Currao), he has all of this info. And, perhaps IRO can help with this. You may have some other suggestions, also.
I look forward to seeing your photos (my daughter takes pictures with her phone and they turn out great).
