I am searching for information on the Welsh/Walsh family from County Mayo. My gr grandmother was Sarah Agnes. Her parents were Richard and Mary. Siblings were Martin, b. about 1830, married to Catherine Connor, John Henry, b about 1846, Hannah or Ann Marie, b. early to mid 1840's, and Bridget, b. about 1850. According to records in the US, Sarah was born about 1858, but the only record I could find for a baptism was 1853 in Aglish RC parish, with a home address listed as Drimneen. The men were all stone masons. Martin was first listed in Philadelphia in the mid 1850's, with the rest arriving after that. I plan to visit this spring and would be very interested in meeting with someone who may be able to guide my search.
Thank you.

Hi Barbara,
Sara's baptism record is on www.rootsireland.ie/ - is that where you found it?
Only 1 Walsh (Nelly aged 50) in Mayo in the 1821 Irish Census & no Welshes
Better luck in the Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) which have Ricahrd Walsh:

Informant 2:Bridget WalshI couldn't find the parents' marriage in Mayo so wondered if Mary was from another County?
The North Mayo Heritage Centre would be the place to get advice if they are from Aglish
I couldn't find them on ancestry so perhaps noone has 'claimed' them yet.
I have a cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo. There are 78 Walsh burial records in total from both counties; Mayo are mostly from Aughagower R C Cemetery, Ballintubber, Burrishoole, Castlebar but no Richards among them!!

Thank you for the information. Drimneen is in the south of Mayo; it doesn't make sense that Sarah Walsh would be baptized in Aglish, does it? Also, there are quite a few children listed. Is there any way to determine if they are all from the same Richard and Mary? I did find a Patrick, who was a joiner, who lived for a time with John Henry. The ones I listed in my original post all emigrated to Philadelphia and that is where they are buried. Is Honoria the same name as Hannah (Ann)?
Do you have any suggestions for me when I come over?

Hi Barbara,
There is a Townland in Aglish Parish named Drumneen so Drimneen could be a mis-spelling or transcription error. Sara's was the only record which had Drimneen (thought the others had no address!!)
Alternatively, Drumneen is only 11 km from Aglish so not impossible.
Honor & Hannah are not the same name I'm afraid.
I suggest you post again with Aglish in the title info & if we have a liaison person from there he/she will hopefully assist
Following that you could email north mayo genealogy to see what they advise.
If you will be in Dublin, there are genealogical advisers at the National Library (free) and at the Irish Immigration Museum (EPIC) - consult included in ticket price.

Col,
Thank you so much for your help.
I thought Aglish was South Mayo, but you indicate it is North. I will try posting again. It is confusing as I can only find information on Sarah, if indeed it is the correct Sarah! I had not planned to go to Dublin, but may have to reconsider. Are there any knowledgable people in Mayo you could recommend to assist me when I am there?

Not sure how to post about Aglish. I did mention it in my original post. Can you help?

Hi Barbara,
Yes I should have been more specific; what I was suggesting was to post your query with heading Walsh / Welsh Aglish? Mayo
If no luck here you could email both north & south mayo heritage centres for advice on who to consult.
I also wonder whether dna testing would help to pinpoint your origin but I'm afraid I have little knowledge in that area.
I'm a liaison person for Achill, Mayo which is out of the way but has stunning scenery so might be worth a visit.

Good afternoon Woodling:
I'm forwarding your post to some of our Mayo volunteers who live locally and would have more knowledge of the area. They will reply via this thread. If you need any further information or have any other questions, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Jane

I have just found out the family was from Drumneen just south of Castlebar, just off N84. As of 2016 there were still 3 Walshes there: Martin, Bridget and Patrick. Unfortunately the houses are not there as a new highway N5 is being built. I would hope the are still in the area. Is there any way to check?

It appears that the family may have come from Drumneen by Aughadrina,
south of Castlebar, just off the road to Ballinrobe. In looking for information, it appears that the area was cleared by Lord Lucan. It seems Richard Walsh may have then moved to the Mount Daisy area. A resident of the area said some of the family may have moved to Turlough.
