And here is the million dollar question.
My grandfather, Albert Lafayette Ward b. 1859 in Missouri, USA, was living with the John Devlin family in 1870 in Iowa, USA. Albert's mother had died about 1863 and Albert's father, Daniel D. Ward, had given all the younger children away. I feel there must be a connection among Daniel, Mary Jane, and Ann. Daniel lists Prince Edward Island, Canada as his place of birth in 1804. I can't find any proof of his birth there or of any parents anywhere.

Hi Toni,
You have quite a conundrum there.
If Ann married Peter Jnr, they would be half brother and sister if they are both Mary Janes children. Where did they get married, have you got the marriage cert? They all died in USA & I have never seen a USA Death or marriage cert, so you may get more information from that. I know in Scotland some of them do have the maiden name of the mother. So have a look at those.
I do know that in my own family children were placed with neighbours, when parents died & there were difficult circumstances. Perhaps they were childminding for the father while he worked. The only way you will solve this is by going wider out though the family and get all the relevant certs & do a time & place line for them. Are they on the immigration lists & if on the Census does it say the relationship & check them all as sometimes an elderly person then will live with the young people as they get older. I usually focus on the youngest sibling in the family, as they may leave a better informed paper trail.
Also bear in mind that Ward & McEnany are common names from Co Monaghan, likewise with Marys & Anns. McEnany also has numerous spelling variations and dont discount them. Next year when the parish records are online you may have more success.
Look at all the Census & see can you come to an agreement as to where he was born, because, it may may not have been him that filled it out. I looked at Ancestry & found this. It may be your Daniel.
Best Wishes & Good luck with your search Carmel

No, that is not my Daniel Ward. I have started a tree at ancestry, ~~Ward McEnany Devlin Tree http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/61378073/family?fpid=36072459305 , with the information I have been able to find. Both Ward women seem to have magically appeared, just like Daniel did. I have no way to backtrack them to Ireland. Perhaps Ward is the married name of Mary Jane and/or Ann. This is the findagrave for Ann http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=MCE&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=14&GScntry=4&GSsr=1041&GRid=50258784&
And here is Mary Jane's http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=MCE&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=14&GScntry=4&GSsr=1081&GRid=50258940&
I have Daniel documented from his first marriage in 1835 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to his death. All the census say he was born in Prince Edward Island but there is no paper trail for him. Since PEI was a Brithish possession I don't know if there would be anything other than church records. Another cousin went to PEI several years ago but didn't find anything. I suspect there isn't anything surviving even if there was a record at one time. There are other Wards in PEI around that time but none of them had a son named Daniel that I can find. I've researched a lot of Dimmock/Dimmit/DeMott families hoping to get a clue for Daniel D. Ward but all those are a dead end, too. His middle name is spelled several different ways on items we have found.
I will look for death for Mary Jane and Ann. Mary Jane was married in Ireland in 1819. Ann was married in New York in 1848.
P.S. I do have the baptism records for some of the children Wesleyan Methodist Church, Ontario, Canada. They moved a lot! We have speculated that Daniel might not have been a fine upstanding citizen, perhaps his family were Torries - the first wife's family was, perhaps he was lazy and just kept moving from place to place. He was run out of Missouri, USA for being anti slavery.
