My grandfather, James Whelan, was born in the village of Bansha in 1873. His father was a shopkeeper. His parents were James Whelan and Honora (Anne) Keating. All of his brothers and sisters emigrated, all but one to the U.S., another brother to Australia. Some of the family used the name Phelan.

I'm told some of the Keatings stayed in the Bansha area. His mother's sister Ellen married Patrick Heffernan and her brother James Keating married Mary Doherty.

Would love to hear from others with Whelan/Phelan and Keating ancestors.

  • Johanna was my 2xGreat Grandmother; she was born about 1830 - all we know is that it was in Co. Mayo.  Johanna was in Toronto, Ontario by 1850 or so - she married James McAvay, b. Co. Tipperary here in Toronto.  Johanna died in 1914 - we'd love to know where in Co. Mayo she was born and whether there's any family still living there.
