Hello,

I am looking for parents and any siblings of Elizabeth Ryan. Elizabeth came over to Australia about 1885 and married a John Walsh from Kilkenny in 1887 in Queensland Australia.

Her marriage certificate states she was born to Michael Ryan and Julia Ryan, Abbington Limerick. It also states she was 23 years old at the time of the marriage.

I haven't been able to find a birth or baptism of Elizabeth. I did get a marriage certificate from Irish Family History for a Michael and Julia Ryan in 1859 but I really don't know if this is the right Ryans.

Any help would be really appreciated

Cathy

  • Hey Cathy

I have had a look in our records , I fund the above Marriage of Michael and Julia Ryan in Feb 1859 , I found four children to this family but unfortunately there is no Elizabeth

    1. Mary b 1860

    2. Matthew b 1862

    3. Michael b 1864

    4. Kate b 1866

This is the only Michael and Julia  having children around this time

However  I do believe that your Ryans are from Abington/Murroe Parish because as far as i know there is only one Abington in Limerick and this is it .

In doing my own family history I have found that people can be omitted  so it is possible that  she is part of this family but was left out in transcrption.

I will look again and let you know

  • Hello Aine,

This is really great, thank you so much for that.

Is it possible Elizabeth/Lizzy may have been baptised in a different parish?

I guess it is always possible she didn't put her right age on the marriage certificate! She did call herself Lizzy on the certificate but then it changed to Elizabeth on the birth of her 3rd child. (These are all Australian Certificates).

    Thank you once again

    Warm regards

  • Hey Cathy

It is possible that she may have been baptised in another parish , I have seen from doing my own family research that they seemed to go to the nearest church in some cases,Cappamore and Caherconlish and Doon are the parishes borderin the parish of Murroe that would be most likely . Some of the above children to Michael and Julia  have adress each different how ever - address are names of townsland within Murroe

    • Mary b 1860

    • Matthew b 1862- Murroe

    • Michael b 1864- Cahernahallia(Not sure of this one maybe coolnahalia)

    • Kate b 1866- Annagh

This shows that they move around a lots its possible hat she was baptised in another parish .

However there are 3 Eliza Baptised in 1864  in Murroe Parish:

    1. Eliza b - Apr 1864 to William Ryan and Margaret Doyle , Annagh

    2. Eliza b -30 July 1864 to Michael Ryan and And Sarah Ring , Ashroe

    3. Eliza b 30 July 1964 to Martin Ryan and and Margaret Gibbons- Knocknagurteeny

Hopes this Helps , Let me know if you have any questions

  • Hello again Aine,

Thanks so much for your response. I have tried to find Mary and Michael on Roots Ireland from your information.

I bought 4 certificates from Roots Ireland. These were

Mary 1860 but mothers name was Johanna Ryan. One of the sponsors is Johanna so ? mistake

Matthew born 1862, Michael and Julie Ryan parents as above

Thomas born 1864  Michael and Julie Ryan parents. I couldn't find Michael iln  1864. Thomas was Cahernahalia as well.

Catherine born 1866  Michael and Julie Ryan parents as above.

Cappamore Doon and Caherconlish are all in County Limerick arent they? Would that mean the parish records are in a different place?

The 3 names of Eliza certainly don't appear to be 'my elusive Elizabeth'.

I had even thought that perhaps the Mary born in 1860 was her. Elizabeth's  third born daughter was named Mary Elizabeth!!

I am heading over to Ireland in about 6 weeks, so not sure where to go from here.

Thank you so much for your help.

    Warm regards

    Cathy

  • Hey Cathy ,

I do believe , that Mary is the child of Michael and Julia , even though the name is Johanna , i have come across this in many cases while doing my own reseach and in one rare case the the mothers ame was bridget instead of Margaret - I know big difference :P  - I apologise i forgot to ention that in the last message .

I am working off a transcribed version an mistake could have been made during the transcription  and of course we can never say 100% that she is their daughter but we can make a fair guess althought they say you should never asume in genealogy - One thing you could do is check the original when you come and see what is written down - some priest wrote down nickame and initals - its never straight forward!

The parish of Cappamore,  and Caherconlish are neighbouring parishes of Murroe , Doon is a bit further on past cappamore and all are no more that 5- 15mins mins away from murroe village itself .

All parish records are held by the parish priest themselves in each parish , most priest are more than happy to help as long as you give them some notice - Just go armed with as much info as you know because the Ryan name around this area is very common and can be tricky to figure out

If you have any question just ask
