My Great Grandmother’s maiden name differs on various colonial documents.  Recorded as Barbara Connolly, born abt 1838, Galway, Ireland, on her marriage certificate to John Mooney in 1864 at Ballarat, Victoria.  Her life as Barbara Mooney is a rags to riches to rags story, well chronicled in newspaper articles until her death in 1838.  Other maiden names, Henaghan, Hanahan, Manning and possibly Ross, are on her gaol records, and the Birth and Death certificates of her children.

In a local child support case, it was reported Barbara Henaghan had a child in England before coming to Australia in 1859.  There is a birth certificate of Ignatius Manning, child of Francis Manning and Barbara Conley (Heenan), it includes a number of children from an 1857 marriage in Ireland.

Very little of Barbara’s life can be verified before her marriage to John Mooney.  I get the feeling Barbara has brushed her tracks, all that is written may not be true.  Depending on who Barbara is, her arrival in the colony could be as a child c1840-42, as teenager c1852-53, or as an adult in 1859.  What little information exists is contradictory, possibly convict related.

Who is Barbara?  If her name is correct, then her part history is;-

CONNOLEY [Conley, Connolly, Connelly, et al.], Barbara.  (Abt 1838 Galway or Mayo, Ireland-1878 Melbourne, Australia). Barbara’s partners:-

  • m1? Abt 1855 UK or Ireland? HENAGHAN? [HEENAN, HANNAN, HANNON, HANAHAN et al.].
  • m2? Abt 1857 UK or Ireland? MANNING? Francis (Abt 1835 Ireland-1863 NZ?).
  • m3. 1864 Australia MOONEY, John (Abt 1800 Offaly, Ireland-1868 Victoria, Australia).
  • m4? Abt 1869 Australia OWENS? John (? Ireland/UK-?)

Barbara’s parents:-

CORBETT, Mary (Abt 1820 Ireland?-?) m. CONNOLEY [Conley, Connolly, Connelly?], Thomas (Abt 1815 Ireland?-?)

Does the above sound vaguely familiar?

Thanks

Bill

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest Barbara Connolly baptismal record in Galway or Mayo was in 1854. Likely your Barbara was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to the late 1830s. Many of the RC parishes in Galway and Mayo have late starting records.  I was also unable to find the Francis Manning/Barbara Conley marriage in 1857.
