William Arnold born about 1800 and his wife Isabella Stark from Bodoney,Tyrone arrived in Australia in 1856/1857 with their 9 children John, James, Mary, Margaret, Jane (my great-great grandmother), Rebecca, William, Isabella and Robert.

His  younger brother Robert Arnold along with his wife Harriet and 6 children ariived in Australia on the 19th March, 1850 aboard The Reliance but I can find no shipping records for my William Arnold and his family.

William was later murdered at Brighton, Victoria in 1877. His death certificate has his father as William Arnold, farmer and his mother as Margaret Arnold formerly Adams.

Just putting up this message in the hope that someone can help me connect the dots!

Cheers Alison

  • Alison,

Bodoney is 2 parishes, Upper & Lower. I searched the tithe applotment records (which should list most farmers) for the years 1825 & 1830 but did not find anyone named Arnold.

I also searched Griffiths Valuation (1860) but there were no Arnold households listed in either parish then. There were 18 Arnold households in the county but none in those 2 parishes.

You haven’t said what denomination your family was but looking at the 1901 census for the county the majority of Arnolds then were Presbyterian, with some Church of Ireland, some Baptists and 1 RC family.

You could try searching for family baptisms. For Bodoney Lower only the Church of Ireland has records for part of the period you need. Their records start in 1812.

In Bodoney Upper, most of the early Church of Ireland baptism records were destroyed in the 1922 fire in Dublin.  They have baptisms for 1806 – 1810 only. Glenelly Presbyterian church has baptisms from 1836 but otherwise no other denomination has any records for the years you are interested in. Copies of the surviving records I have mentioned are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are not on-line there and so a personal visit is required to view them.

    Hi. Alison

William's brother Robert and Harriet are my 3rd great grandparents.  I have them noted fromCappagh or Ardstraw Tyrone.  Robert and Harriet married there.  There father was also born there also.  I never new William was murdered.  Another peice of the puzzle.  I also have found the father was married to a Mary Adams.  More research :-)  Regards  Kerry
