Hi All, I'm looking for the origins of my 3 X Greatgrandfather William Callaghan (1819-1894) details as above in the title. He arrived in Sydney on the "bounty" migrant ship "Resource". "Profession - Servant". I don't have a departure date, but William married in Sydney in 1848, so prior to that year. Thanks in advance- Graham

  • GB,

The bounty immigrant ship Resource arrived in Sydney on 22 Dec 1840. As you mentioned above, the record shows his parents listed as Daniel & Hannah Callaghan.

I wonder where you found his baptismal date of 21 Nov 1819 because I found one on that same date for another William Callaghan, baptised in Skibbereen, Cork; but his parents are John Callaghan and Anne Leacy. I trust that he knew his own parents' names, so this is probably another person.

  • Hi Carolyn, I was hoping to go a generation or 2 further back than Williams parents. Maybe an address or similar? I have about 3 dna matches in the USA with Callaghan lineage, but none of them go any further back than what I already know. Perhaps you could cross reference them if your on Ancestry? The baptismal date comes from another dna cousin in Australia, who is a descendant of one of Williams wife's siblings. Thanks.

  • GB,

I took a long look on Ancestry, and here lies one big problem with it! There are 17 public family trees for William Callaghan all with basically the same information...married Margaret Scott, and had four children.  The two trees with the most records attached have both attached that baptismal record I referenced above with his parents' names as John Callaghan and Anne Leacy, but they left Daniel and Hannah on his profile for his parents. One tree even had "Hannah Leacy" as his mother. So, the other trees all then copied this incorrect baptismal date which then gets accepted as correct. The majority of the trees do not have parents listed for him. I did find a church marriage record on the irishgenealogy.ie site for a Daniel Callaghan & Hannah Foley marrying on 22 Sept 1803 in St. Finbarr's South, Cork City, Cork.  However, I did not find any children for them...including William. Perhaps there are missing records or gaps from particular areas of Co. Cork. One cannot be certain those are his parents - especially given the number of years between their marriage and his birth. Sorry I don't have more information to help you go further back.

    Cheers!

    Carolyn
