Looking for information on William Hynes  born between 1810-1820?, father of Thomas who was born in Liverpool in 1840.  William married a NC girl, name unknown.  He died as a result of an accident, his occupation is listed as Joiner on Thomas's marriage certificate.  Thomas joined the British Army at age 19 and retired to Australia with his wife Caroline and several of their children.  Thomas is my paternal great grandfather.

  • Kathy:

The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has six William Hynes/Hinds baptismal records between 1810-1821 in Dublin city. Four were Roman Catholic and two were Church of Ireland. Do you know the religion f your ancestor? Also, was Thomas his oldest son? None of the six records that I located showed a father named Thomas.

  • Hi Roger, I'm fairly sure William was a Roman Catholic as his parents took in his family on the condition they converted to catholicism.  Thomas apparently refused and joined the British Army as a Private at age 19 so he may well have been the oldest of the three children, the other two I believe to be a brother and a sister.

  • Hi Kathy,  Yes I found it is Caroline Davis.
Caroline Davis was born in Canada.
She married Thomas Hynes in Buttevant, County Cork in 1964......copy attached.
The children were born in Gibralter, Dublin, Burmuda.
    Whittington In Staffordshire in England
    Camberly in Surrey.
They lived in Frimley in Surrey, they are listed in the 1891 Census.

    Hope this helps. Margot

  • oooops  1864 not 1964.

Have looked for William Hynes, one possible.
May take a bit of time to confirm.

  • Thanks Margot, I have everything about Thomas from his marriage onwards, it's his former years that are a mystery as we have no idea who his mother or his siblings were, or indeed anything to do with either the Hynes or Davis famiiy histories.  I have Thomas's military records and some writings of Caroline's but their parents aren't mentioned at all.

  • Did Thomas have a sister Sarah born 1850 in Burnely, Lancashire, England?
There are two Thomas Hynes in Liverpool 1837 and 1843.
One has the father William and the other Thomas.  Trees in Australia have picked up the hints in Ancestry and have chosen Thomas and Elizabeth Elliot for your Thomas.

  • Thanks Margot, I am aware that the popular thought is that Thomas and Elizabeth  are the parents, however William is the name for Thomas's father on his (Thomas's) marriage certificate.  Also Thomas's military records show his date of birth as 1840.
