  • Hi Jane,

You stated that there is still part of the O'Donnell family in Scariff.  My husband is Daniel O'Donnell son of Charles James O'Donnell, grandson of Thomas Edward O'Donnell and great grandson of Patrick O'Donnell and Ellen Long.  Thomas was on the Scariff/Clare hurling team of 1919.  Most of the family migrated in the 1920's and moved to Detroit including Ellen Long (her siblings were already in the Detroit area).  Any information of the family that is still in Scariff would be appreciated.   Dan and I were there in 2014 for the first time.  His grandmother was from Mayo and my grandmother was from Bray so we were doing alot of family searching along with sighseeing.  We are planning on going back once the pandemic is under control.  Would love to be able to connect with the families.

    Warm regards,

    Mary Gardner-O'Donnell

  • Hello Annie O'D

Just to congratulate you on the great work you have done. Like you I am a resident of Victoria, and I visited the Gleeson graves in the Yambuk cemetery as I have been looking for a Michael Gleeson from county Clare who might have emigrated to the Yambuk area. What is a bit strange about the origins of James and Michael Gleeson is that their death certificates are both certified by Michael son of James. James' certificate indicates place of birth to be Tipperary and Michael's certificate indicates place of birth to be County Clare. However above you mention that Michael was born in Tipperary. I would be grateful if you could confirm your source for Michael Gleeson's place of birth please. Was that recorded on the marriage certificate when he married his sister-in-law's sister Mary? Perhaps I need to go on to Find-my-Past and see if I can locate baptisms of James and Michael to parents James Gleeson and Mary Carroll.

    Thanks and best wishes,

    Laurence Gleeson

  • Hi Laurence, there doesn't seem to be any clarification of this except that on the birth of Michael Gleeson in 1892 (son of Michael and Mary O'Donnell) Michael snr lists his place of birth as Tipperary. James on his marriage to Johanna O'Donnell also lists his place of birth as Tipperary. So I'm guessing that might be right. I haven't tried to search their baptisms as I have been concentrating mainly on the O'Donnells. I have attached the marriage certificates for you. My email address is annieodonnell58@gmail.com if I can try to help further.

  • Hello Annie,

I currently live in Killarney near Port Fairy. My interest in the the Yambuk cemetery came as a result of an long time acquaintance family name Crowe, who told me he has it in his family anecdotal history that his ancester John Crowe came to Australia with his good friend Michael Gleeson. My Gleeson family does not have any record of living connection with Gleesons in Co Clare in the area where we know they came from. However John Crowe came from the same area and so I was working to see if I could make any link to the Michael in Yambuk. Hence my interest to see if the Michael buried in Yambuk might have a connection to Co Clare. Clearly he did have through his wife.

It is clear from Johanna marriage certificate James Gleeson is from Tipperary as he would have provided the information. The pdf file pdf file for Mary's marriage certificate for the marriage on 14 May 1884 is to Michael Ryan. I am wondering if you have the marriage certificate for the second marriage to Michael Gleeson? But if you don't I doubt that I will pursue it to the point of purchasing a certificate, as I am failry sure that this Michael Gleeson is not of any direct interest.

My personal email is laurence.j.gleeson@gmail.com - if you are ever in this part of the world it would be nice to meet - if only for me to thank you for your excellent work. I dont think I have much to offer on your side of the equation.

    Best regards,

    Laurie Gleeson
