I hope you can help me to find out more about the Newry Spotswoods and Wilsons pre 1830
Hi, I have been researching the Spottiswood family for several years now. There were, I think several John Spottiswood contemporaries of the specific one I am trying to connect back from.
one thing someone here might be able to clarify for me. Bishop James Spottiswood had a servant John Spotswood. I understand it was quite common for gentry to employ younger members of their extended family. But I remember reading somewhere that servants sometimes took the names of their masters. Is that true? The following are likely to be my ancestors From Treasure your Exceptions .

Their landlord was Clugston. John Spotswood of Carlingford, married Elizabeth Cluxton . Their eldest son Hugh died on a voyage home (probably from Quebec) on the brig Greenhow in 1828. Their daughter Sarah (b. ca ,1814) married her cousin James Spottiswoode Wilson (my GGGGrandfather) in Newry. Her brother Richard Keane Spotswood was baptised at Clonallan.
I believe the Newry Spotswoods were Presbyterians whereas the Dundalk Spotswoods were Catholic and the Eniskillen Spotswoods appear to have been COI.
Henry Spotswood, Church Street. Listed in names of those householders in Dundalk who had a property value of five pounds and over in 1837, 'Valuation Office House Books (misc.), reference 5.3734' in the National Archives of Ireland (NAI)
Henry Spotswood of Boat Street and George Spotswood of Courtney Hill are listed as saddlers in the 1820 Newry directory. James Wison’s father William, was born about 1787. He died on 17 Aug 1843 in Greeenfield, Nr. Gawler, South Australia. He married Charlotte Spottiswood on 26 Dec 1811 in Newry.
Charlotte Spotswood (b. Newry, ca 1794) was the daughter of George. She also had a sister Sarah. Both families intermarried with the Blackham family of Newry. Richard Spotswood lived at the Wilson residence at 14 King St , Newry when he applied for immigration.
I would like to know more about James and Sarah’s parents their occupations and birth places. James Wilson (b. Around 1813 in Newry) was very well educated. He was listed as a Carpenter when they left for Australia on the Eden in 1838. He went on to be an explorer, inventor, geologist and wrote 3 books. I have lots of information from that time .
