Hi looking for information on workman family at Portadown, co Armagh. My ancestor is John workman who married Margaret may (1803- born drumcree) known children. Robert 1834, Ellen 1837 and John 1841. I believe John workman had a brother Meredyth. Here is a letter from Margaret workman to my elderly mother's great grandfather. Church records show Robert workman may have been christened John William workman

  •        In Griffith's Valuation of Armagh, there were two Meredith Workmans and two Margarets listed as head of household in 1865.

  • Thank you Patricia. Wondering if there is anywhere else I can further research these two families. If we are DNA connected to these families their descendant/our ancestor forged a great pathway in NZ in mid 1800s. Looking for descendants of these families

  • Hi,

I looked on the paid site, Roots Ireland, for birth and marriage records for your family; but the only two records I saw were those of two children of Meredith.

    Here they are:

Charles Workman, baptized 28 Oct 1827, residence - Kilmoriarty, parish - Portadown, CI, Armagh, parents - Meredith Workman, weaver & Elizabeth (no surname)

Caroline Anne Workman, baptized 27 Feb 1831, residence - Corcrain??, parish - Portadown, CI, Armagh, parents - Meredith Workman, weaver & Elizabeth (no surname)

I'm not sure why the records you are searching for do not show on Roots Ireland because the baptism records for Portadown began in 1826.

    Regards,

    Carolyn

Diviny and Richmount are side by side, so these 2 families were just a few hundred yards apart and are likely to be related.

Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. If you have already tested your DNA with Ancestry, My Heritage or 23&Me you can upload your DNA results to Family Tree DNA for free and then join the North of Ireland Family History Society DNA Project. Simple instructions on how to do this can be found here:
