Is there any information on James Coghlan who kived at Granite Cottage, Ulverton Rd, Dalkey near the petrol station in at least 1888 to 1894? Was he the man who had a shop in Careysford Ave, Blackrock in 1848? Pharmacist, Charles O'Reilly, later lived at  Granite Cottage and though his mother was nee Coghlan, were the two men related? They were not uncle and nephew. Thank you.

  • Hello Miriam.

Charlie O'Reilly was born in 1893 and I already know his family history. To  have any hope of slotting James Coghlan into Coghlan ancestry, it is his data I need.  I don't know who he was or anything about him except his residence in Granite Cottage and a move in 1894 or just before the Thoms Directory for 1894 was printed; he was then listed as James Coghlan Esq.,at 66 Dalkey Avenue between Barnhill Ave and Killiney Rd. It would be a real coincidence if there was no connection between the men when Charlie's mother was [nee Coghlan]. Obviously there was quite a time lapse before Charie lived in the cottage. As I can't find James Coghlan in the 1901 census, I presume he died between 1894 and 1901 but I haveen't found his death details.

    Thanks..

  • "At the least" says it all Miriam. Any link has to be to Charlie's greatgrandfather, Charles Coghlan, born 1764 ? where and ? to whom and ? siblings. He was faming Northside by at least late 1770s. My guess is that a relative of his was amid the Clondalkin Coghlans pre 1872 who had property near the 9th Lock and maybe retired as "Esq" to Dalkey. One of Charles O'Reilly's uncles moved from Kilbarrack to Clondalkin 9th Lock region in 1872 but it wasn't to a former Coghlan property. Will keep digging!
