Civil Parishes throughout County Donegal (IrelandXO Links)

Share This:

Trying to figure out which Civil Parish you happen to come from, can quickly or unexpectantly become a confusing enough task to try and complete. The simple reason for this is that the local parish and townland names are not readily used or as prominent when filling in documentation that you come across nowadays, compared to the various Census Records, Births, Marriages, and Deaths Records that were used back in the early 1800’s up to the mid to late 1900’s.

More prominent in the earlier years, all local families or individuals, living in a certain area or perhaps emigrating abroad to various locations throughout the globe, most readily identified themselves within a particular Parish or Townland, as this was how the school and religious systems was generally organised.

These Parishes often ignore the boundaries of Towns and Counties, making them more specific to the local Community.  Going back as far as the early 1800’s, emigrants from Ireland usually named the Parish that they lived in as their point of origin, and so nowadays anyone researching their family history will need to know these locations when trying to connect their descendants back to a certain part of that county within Ireland. To help anyone searching for the correct name of the Civil Parish in Donegal, that we as locals call home, below is a complete list of the Civil Parishes and their map locations throughout the County of Donegal.

They are simply displayed below as North-West Donegal, South-West, South-West and North-East Donegal. You can see the name of the Civil Parish on the left (which is a link) followed by the names of the main villages, towns or known features that will help you orientate you to your place of interest.

Clicking on the links below will bring you directly to the Parish Page to where you can see all the local information that has been posted up on the Ireland Reaching Out Website ( It is a work in progress but before long each Parish Page within Donegal will hopefully have helpful links added, such as a Parish Location Map and Parish Historical links to help search the various census reports and land records that would be of interest.

Fingers crossed this list will help you to connect to your own Parish, and please feel free to add any amount of interesting family or local material to the parish pages, as this will go a long way to help the local community in County Donegal to grow its own global network. Thank you.

Would you believe there are well over 50 Parishes within the County, each having its own Ireland Reaching Out Parish Page. Each of these Parish Pages would love to have more Volunteers to help bring to life the Heritage of the Donegal Community by documenting the People, the Buildings and the Events that existed, and with it enhance the history of the Parish or that of the County of Donegal as a whole. If you are interested in becoming a Parish Liaison for your locality Ireland-reaching-out would love to hear from you.
