The study of local government in Ireland has suffered from the attraction of national politics. The small proportion of books

dealing specifically with local authorities compared with their national big brother has arguably diminished the important role

that local government has played in shaping Ireland.

 

For the first time, A History of Castlebar: Municipal Government 1613-2014 comprehensively records the history of

urban government in Castlebar, County Mayo, and logs the contribution to civic life made by so many public representatives.

The work provides detailed accounts of each authority’s functions, elected membership, successes and challenges against the

backdrop of national politics. In doing so, the history of Castlebar town itself emerges.

 

Noel Campbell is a native of Castlebar. He is a former elected member of Castlebar Town Council (2004-09) and graduate of

NUI Galway (history) and UCD with a keen interest in local history.
