This free audio guide will delve through centuries of Kilmallock’s history, from its foundation in around 600 AD by St. Mocheallóg, to the arrival of the Normans who built the town walls and gates, and through the medieval period when Kilmallock became the seat of the Desmond Earls and one of the principal towns in the province of Munster.
Many of the ancient sites that you will encounter during your journey around the town, such as the Dominican Priory, the Stone Mansion and the Collegiate Church, date from this period.
Kilmallock was the centre of rebellions, conflict and conquest during the turbulent years from the late 1500s to the late 1600s and the town was raided, burned and pillaged on numerous occasions.
