I am trying to find any information that I can regarding the birth of my Great Grandfather William John Mitchell. According to my Grandfathers birth registration and my Great Grandfathers Death registration, William John Mitchell was born in Belfast, Ireland in approximately 1840. He married Anne Roberts who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in approximately 1856, and died in New Zealand in 1928. I have no information about his parents or siblings or when he left Ireland.

Dorothy, Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. William John?s birth is well before that and so you have to rely on church records. Not all parishes have records that have survived and not all of the surviving records are on-line. You don?t say what William John?s denomination was. Do you know? You could try the rootsireland site or Ulster Heritage Foundation (both are pay to view/subscription) to see if there is any record of Wm John?s baptism. Ideally you really need his parents details from his marriage or death certificate. Did he marry in Scotland or was it in New Zealand? Elwyn
