I am searching for my great great grandparents George Crawford Holmes and Anne Lefroy Courtenay whose marriage banns were issued in Dublin in 1827 and who had children born throughout Antrim and Tipperary up to 1854. Anne was a daughter of Sarah Lefroy and Capt Thomas Courtenay. I would love to hear from anyone living in Ireland who may be part of this family. Two unmarried children of George and Anne were still living in Broomhill in 1901. They were Anthony Lefroy Holmes and Lucy Jane Holmes.

  • Hi thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Do you have any more information on George and Anne? Do you know, for example, what parish they were part of while they were living in Antrim and Tipperary? If you could find this out, it would greatly help you in your search.

If you could find out what parish they lived in, or even the name of a town or village you could try posting a message  in any relevant newletter, newspaper etc in the area to see if there are any living relatives in the area.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • I have discovered the Gravestone Inscription Records for George and Anne.

George died 2 Jul 1884 aged 66, therefore born 1798.

Anne died 24 Nov 1872 aged 63, therefore born 1809.

Their residence was listed as Broomhill.

They are buried in the Littleton C of I Graveyard.

Anne is noted as the eldest daughter of the late Colonel Courtenay of Grange House, and granddaughter of the late Colonel Lefroy of Limerick.

  • Hi,

In case it is of any interest to you, Sarah Lefroy was the sister of my great, great, great grandfather Benjamin Lefroy.  My great-grandmother Sophia was the daughter of Robert Exham Turbett and Lucy Lefroy.

  • Hi Annemarie

Would your great great great grandfather be Benjamin Langlois Lefroy, brother of Tom of Jane Austin fame?

He's in my Holmes - Mahoney Queensland ancestry public tree as one of Sarah's numerous siblings.

    Cheers

    Roz

  • Hi Roz

Yes he was. My g.g.g.grandmother was Catherine Tessier de LA Nauze. He was married three times and she was his second wife. My son and I very much resemble the Lefroys. We have the blonde hair and the blue eyes. Everyone else in my family are dark.

    Interesting things genes!!
