  • Hi,

Understanding where to locate what records, for the time periods you are looking at - is crucial to your search.

The guide at http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html can help you navigate where you should be looking.

You need to know a couple of items that can enable your search. If you know what religion your great grandparents practiced either before or after the immigration to the United States, this will help direct your efforts.

When did they emigrate/immigrate? Even a slim range of dates will also help you to locate records.

I came across something that may be of interest to you: http://ancestralfootprints.com/sub_in/indiana/gp50.htm#head0 (I normally scan Google free ebooks when searching for leads to help guide and offer suggestions)

I do not know if you have seen this before, but it looks like a cousin stateside may have data you need to get your search in Ireland going. There are links presented above each name William Sefton and Charlotte Joppin as " a tree icon", an "N" for notes, and an "S" for sources, as well as an email address to contact them.

It looks according to this that your search will be in County Down. and their date of leaving Ireland would be between 1804 & 1806.

The site at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor has a section under ancestor search that should be helpful to you as well, although the name tracker is pulled off of 1847/1864 Griffiths Valuation data, this can help guide you to where to look for possible descendants of your familiies. I was seeing at the Irish times site that only 2 variants of the name spelling are showing for this 1847-1864 time period.

    Hope this helps, Jeanette

  • Hi there: I have no clue if we are related but we are descended from a William Sefton born around 1895. And we are from Illinois. Our Seftons came from Cork. I'll try to find my family tree and post more later. Just wanted to say hi from a Sefton!
