Robert Savage and his wife Jane Mongomery had a son John b abt 1817.  The only information I have for Robert and Jane is that they came from County Antrim.

John migrated from Antrim to Newmains, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland about 1840 (or earlier?).  he married Margaret Todd in 1844 in Bothwell, Scotland.  (Margaret, who died in 1854, was the daughter of George Todd and Elizabeth Wales - both from Scotland.)

They had 4 daughters - Elizabeth, Allison, Jane, and Margaret.

John Savage worked at the Coltness Iron and Steel Works in Cambusbethan in any sources I have found for him and died in Newmains, Cambusnethan in 1882.

His daughters married thus:

Elizabeth in 1862 to John McGown (also spelled as McGowan) - they emigrated to Otago, New Zealand in 1879 - family names are all after grandparents - Margaret, Sarah, Henry and John.  (This family is the subject of another post (McGown) on the Message Board)

  • Hi,

Because of how records were kept during the time period a little more info will be needed. Good explanation of what records there are and where to locate them can be found at http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html Needed will be religious preference as well as DOB, so circling back to Scotland for data to see what can be found on either of those.

On the off chance that Robert was still living sometime in the period 1847-1864 I ran his name throgh Griffiths Valuation and 27 listings for a Robert Savage showed a couple in County antirm and quite a few in County Down.

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch

I also looked at the following sites with no results based on data provided, but do not know if you have any other that might guide the searches.

    http://www.rootsireland.ie

    http://www.irishgenealogy.ie

The site http://www.ancestryireland.com did however show a Robert that had children, however the name John was not there. Perhaps there is a middle name for John that was used?

A few items that were noticed:

    1) Another Savage last name for a man called Peter, also in Cambusnethan at Coltness Iron Works,Furnace keeper also born in Ireland. This could be a brother.

    2) Johns Daughter Jane shows at http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/getperson.php?personID=I4027&tree=UKEire so this might be a lead for you as well.

    3) Interesting information was found at http://scottishmining.co.uk/42.html on the area where John and Margaret lived and worked.

    4) The Newmains library resources were moved to a centralized location in Motherwell. before Jul 2011.

    5)  It appears that both John and Margaret are locted in Cambusnethan Churchyard, Greenhead Road,  Wishaw, Scotland as a husband and wife are show under your last names. There is a Moderator who provides photos of headstones, so perhaps they could get the DOB and DOD data for you as well as answer the religion of the church. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=540945.0

Let us know what you come up with and we'll try to direct you to the right resources.

    Hope this all helps, Jeanette

  • Hi Jeanette

Thank you profoundly for your very prompt response to my posting - I appreciate the leads you have given.

County Antrim is the only information I have from any sources/documents that I have searched, including Scottish census returns, birth, marriage and death certificates. I received a copy of John Savage's death certificate this week and that was the first information as to what his parents names  were.  Apart from that I have no dates, and, as he had no sons - no male names to check out as possibilities.

Thanks for the name of Peter in Newmains - I will check him out - this might be where the name of Peter came from in my husband's family, although it was also the name of one of his wife's family.

The family religion seems to have been Presbyterian - the NZ families certainly are, but ten Otago is much like Scotland with Presbyterianism being the main denomination.

We have a photo of the Savage headstone in the cemetery - that is what started us on this search, as part of our NZ family were visiting Scotland and were keen to discover more than just "Dad came from Newmains and worked at the steel mill".  Unfortunately they did not have time to spend checking out any registers etc that may have been available, and I have yet to check out both Bothwell and Newmains parish records to sieve through the names in those registers (particularly Bothwell's marriage register).  (Time constraints being what they are it was just this week that I located a copy of John's Death Certificate and so was able to find what his parent's names were.)

I was trawling through the old posts on Gen Forum last night and found one that might relate to our Savage family - someone had indicated they had found Savages in Omerbane Townland, Parish Newton Crommelin (which I see is actaully Cromlin). This family were there from the 1830's and were still there in the early 1900's - no further response had been indicated to that info.  As John was in Newmains, Scotland by 1841 I am not sure whether that clue is worth following up until I can discover more about this particular family.

Thanks for the tip about Jane marrying into the Clan Moffat - another discovery in the wee small hours this monring......

John's daughter Margaret married James Dove in 1871 and migrated to the USA in 1880

The other daughter - Allison or Alison - seems to disappear with no trace - still working on that one!

    Once again

many many thanks for the help you have given me.

    Blessings

    Helen

  • Hi,

My great grandmother (Allison Savage) was from Newmains, Scotland. she married Samuel Kingan and moved to Nova Scotia, Canada in the mid 1800's 1860's but not really sure.  I have records at that time of a (Jane Moffat), I believe is my great grandmothers sister, moved to N Z?? I have tin-plate photos of Jane Moffat and her husband and also Allison Savage Kingan. My great gramdmother had 14 children together. I don't really know if your (Allison) and my great grandmother are the same person but, it sure seemes that way.

    Thanks,

    John Savage KIngan.

  • Hi John

It looks as if she is the missing member of our family. Have you done any research on her - e.g. Death, Marriage, or Children's Birth Certificates for further details?

    Greetings
