Looking for my G Grandmother Sarah Mccalister. Sarah had two maiden surnames, Mccalister and Mcgonnell. (A mystery )lived  in   Dunloy Ballymoney.

She married John Henry/Henery 1883; she had four children as far as we know.Agnes, John/ orJames, Charles John,,and Rose Ann.

John died approx1895/1901 (no record). Sarah remarried 1903 to James Mcmullan , she had two more children ,Patrick Mcmullan 1904, Daniel1906.

On Her daughter Rose marriage cert in 1923, her maiden name is Mcgonigle , Scottish take on the name , I assumed.

  • The 1883 marriage certificate has a blank where Sarah’s father’s name should be indicating she didn’t know his name. So possibly she was illegitimate, or a foundling. McAlister may have been her mother’s name and McGonnell her fathers, or the name of the family that brought her up.

I can’t see any of the children’s births to John Henry in the civil records. Possibly they weren’t registered. Duneany, where they were living in the 1901 & 1911 censuses, is in Ballymena’s registration district. There was a John Henry death registered in Ballymena on 7.8.1901 aged 57. Don’t know if that’s your family.

Sarah McMullan death regd Ballymena 15.10.1922 aged 75. Another 16.6.1933 aged 68 (this age fits quite well). Another 5.1.1939 aged 70. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

  • Hi  Elwyn, thank you so much for taking interest in my enquiry. As regards the fathers name, on her marriage to James Mcmullan she has  put  her fathers name as James Mccalister,( there are other spellings I assume. I have found her death cert in Birmingham 1949.where she was residing with her Son John Haughain. I believe she may have come back to Dunloy to be buried,St Joseph's maybe? There's no mention of Mccalister as her maiden name on her daughter Rose Marriage cert in Coatbridge Lanarkshire.it is recorded as (Sarah Henry, subsequently Mcmullan, maiden name Mcgonigle), Mcgonigle could have been entered as it sounded we will never know. you probably know the Scottish recorded the parents as well which is a great help.more mystery Elwyn. Elwyn, that sounds like a welsh name,

I am from mid glamorgan near the Rhondda valleys South Wales.i am living in the West Midlands now. I have Henry relations in Rasharkin.Warmest wishes Maureen.
