My great-grandfather's brother Alderman James Dunlop Williamson MD died in 1944, and was buried on 3 March, in the Belfast City Cemetery H2 7. I suspect he may have had a substantial memorial stone as he was Deputy Lord Mayor and made freeman of the City a short time before his death. Is there any one who could take a photo of his headstone for me? His sister Sarah Dunlop Lytle and her husband Robert Lytle are at H2 14, and their babies at H2 13. Maybe those ones too? It's a bit hard for me to get there from New Zealand

I don’t live too far away. I should be able to get photos for you. Not sure quite when I’ll be able to do it but hopefully within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you so much, Elwyn, I am looking forward to this, have I given meaningful references? I hope the graves still exist and writing is legible
Really looking forward to photos,
Julia

There's an office at the cemetery and they are very helpful there about locating graves. They have a good map. It shouldn't be too difficult to find them. Might be a week or so till I am next in the city though.

I called at the City Cemetery today and got photos of the 2 graves. As you will see, the gravestone for James Williamson has fallen forward (or been laid down by the cemetery authorities for safety reasons) and so is not currently legible. Someone would need to pay to have it restored to get the wording on it. I checked the location with the cemetery office so I am sure it's the right grave.

Thank you Elwyn, that's amazing! I'm very grateful. It's a shame the big one is broken, who could I write to about getting it fixed or at least turned over and photographed? There is no family left in Ireland, but many great nieces and nephews overseas, maybe something could be done
Thanks again, Julia

Julia,
The contact details for the Cemetery are on this link:
http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/community/burialrecords/burialrecords.aspx
The normal thing to do would be to get in touch with a Monumental Mason in the Belfast area and arrange with them to repair the stone. I think you probably need to inform the Cemetery authorities to inform them you intend to do it. They should also be able to tell you whether anyone owns the plot today, in which case you would obviously need to clear it with them.
Incidentally, there are 3 other people buried in that grave with James. You can get their details by clicking on the details box on the above site.
