My 2nd G/Grandfather was Hill Chestnut. Born 21 Aug 1827 Billy, Antrim, Northern Ireland. He was baptised at Bushmills Presbyterian Church. (date unknown)

His parents were Isaac Chestnut & Rose Blaney.

He had a brother, Samuel Chestnut. Born 21 March 1823 in Carnfeog, Antrim, Northern Ireland. He was baptised at Bushmills Presbyterian Church on 13 June 1823.

I am looking for any further information at all.  Anything about Isaac and Rose. Whether there were other children?  What became of Samuel?

Hill Chestnut married Ann McGorgan in Billy.  They had two children in Ireland (William 1854 & Mary 1855) before all Emigrating to Australia in 1857.

Thank you in advance.

  • Gaye,

What was Hill Chestnut?s address (townland) and occupation on the 1852 marriage certificate? Also what was his father?s occupation?

We might be able to use that to trace the families.

Looking at the tithe applotment records, I don?t see any Isaac Chestnut listed in the early 1830s. I suspect therefore that the family may have been agricultural labourers, rather than farmers. Labourers tended to move around a lot and that can make them difficult to trace.

No trace of an Isaac Chestnut death in the statutory records, suggesting he was dead by 1864. That will make his death tricky to trace.

Can?t see any obvious marriage for Samuel Chestnut in Ireland. Perhaps he stayed single or moved away from the area.

Bushmills Presbyterian Church?s baptism records start in 1820. They don?t appear to be on-line anywhere so far as I can tell but there is a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. You could search for siblings to Hill & Samuel there, assuming you have someone able to visit the office and search them.
