I am seeking any records of Wisnom's in Larne in the 1700s or earlier. 

PRONI's records show a Captain John Wisnom living in Larne in 1760. There are records of Wisnoms/Wisnams in Carrickfergus and Ballycarry as early as 1791 regarding a lease of land at Duffs Hill, Carrickfergus to Wisnom & Co. Possible births of many in the Carrickfergus area as early as 1744. Capt. John Wisnom is the first link I have found to Wisnoms in Larne.

Any insight or information would be greatly appreciated. 

March 5, 1760 - Searched PRONI’s general on-line catalogue. Only reference of a Wisnom in that area was D2095/18:

“In the Belfast Newsletter, March 5, 1760 "the snow Captain Breton, mounting 10 guns and men answerable, commanded by Captain Robert Wilson" was advertised to sail from Larne for New York, the 1st April ensuing, wind and weather permitting, "any who inclined to indent as servants, go on redemption as passengers, or had goods to ship or freight, were to apply to W. George Dunlop of Ballycastle, Captain John Wisnom or W. Hugh Montgomery of Larne, or W. Thomas Gregg of Belfast." The voyage to America, which in those days would take perhaps 3 months must have entailed many hardships to the passengers in these over loaded sailing vessels."

    Hi Ginna,

    Unfortunately Irish records do not go back as far as the 1700's, civil registration was rolled out in 1864 in Ireland, there are no churchrecords for Larne for the early 1700'rds

  • My name is Coleen. I was born in Carrickfergus. My grandfather was Ronald Wisnom who left the family and moved to USA. I would love to know any family members that might have any info about him. He passed away in Eugene Oregon in the mid 1970s.

  • Does anyone have any information of any Wisnom's still  in Ireland. There seems to be a few in USA. The last remaining was Elizabeth (Betty) Brown née Wisnom who was my aunt. She passed away 1980 ?
