Hello.

My Great Grandparents on both maternal and paternal sides, immigrated to Australia from Ireland in the 1870's.

I have more information on my paternal grandparents who were Patrick James McCluskey and Bridget Scott..From my Great Gradfathers death certificate in Australia, it shows Patricks parents as James McCluskey,1822-1906 and his wife as Sarah McCallam 1827-1911.James occupation is stated as farmer.

I am looking for any assistance possible in obtaining a more detailed family histrory in Ireland.

Any pointers or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou.

  • Hi Michael
I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie/ which is a subscription site for the McCluskeys but didn't have much luck.
There is a baptism record of Patrick McCluskey with father James 27 Oct 1845 Antrim St Patricks R C but mother is Eliza
There is a baptism record of Sara McColm 1831 Antrim parish is St Patricks Belfast R C.
Parents Charles McColm & Eleanor Myers.
Some questions: were McColm & McCallum used interchangeably? Could illiteracy and mistranscription make this record relevant? Is there a connection given that both are from St Patricks R C?
You might want to try having a look for the families in these free sites:
    Tithe Applotments; Griffiths Valuation; PRONI;
    pay sites: geni.nidirect.gov.uk; findmypastireland.ie/

  • You can expect the spelling of the surname to vary a bit in the records. That was very common in Ireland. This may be your family in the 1901 census in Ballyportery South:

They aren?t there in the 1911 census which probably fits the dates you have. However Sarah (junior) seems to have moved to Ballyportery North:

Here are some probate abstracts (summaries) which appear to relate to the family. The full files are in PRONI in Belfast.

Probate of the Will of Sarah McCluskey late of Ballyportery, Co. Antrim, widow, who died 21 March 1911 granted at Belfast 27 August 1920 to Alexander Richmond, Farmer. Effects: ?216 17s 6d.

McCloskey Sarah of Ballyportery county Antrim spinster died 9 July 1934 Probate Belfast 8 January to James Ward farmer. Effects ?35.

McCloskey William of Ballyportery Culcrum P.O. county Antrim farmer died 23 November 1943 Probate Belfast 3 April to Daniel McKay and James Currie farmers. Effects ?213 13s. 7d.

Griffiths Valuation for 1861 lists James McCluskey in Ballyportery South. He farmed plot 1 which was a farmhouse and just over 13 acres of land. That?s on the north side of the modern Ballyportery Rd between Cloughmills and Loughguile village.
