Margaret Jane Rusk and James S Cargo are my 3rd great grandparents. Margaret Jane married James S. Cargo in about 1817 before her first child, Eleanor was born. Her husband James Cargo b. abt 1800 was born in Carnmoney Antrim and it is assumed that is where they were married, no Birth Record or Marriage Record. No Parent information. Margaret Jane and James S presumeably landed in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada and took the ship Charles King to Philadelphia, Penn but Margaret Jane and her last baby, James S Cargo Jr. died at sea before  landing at Philadelphia on Nov 10 1832. Any information would be helpful as I am at a brick wall with both the Rusk and Cargo lineages.

  • Karen,

Neither Cargo nor Rusk are particularly common names around Co Antrim. In the 1901 census there are 2 families of Cargo and 6 of Rusk in the county.  Nearly all the Rusks were Presbyterian, and the Cargos Presbyterian and Church of Ireland (Episcopalian).

I note several Rusk families around Templepatrick which is close to Carnmoney.

I’d be inclined to search the Presbyterian records for Templepatrick and Carnmoney for their baptisms and possible parents marriage. Have you done that? (Copies in PRONI). They are not on-line anywhere so far as I am aware. Also the McKinney records (knowns as the stud book) which list a huge number of families in the Carnmoney area from the 1600s through to the early 1900s. See:

NIFHS offer a look up service for the McKinney records.
