Looking for connection to John and Nancy McMillan who married Muckamore Parish church in 1 Dec 1846 they had 5 children William, Mary who married John McIvor and stayed in Ireland, Henry McKewon McMillan who came to New Zealand in 1875 Thomas McMillan who married Fanny Bingham and also stayed in Ireland, youngest child was Margaret Ann who also emigrated to New Zealand and married here.  Would love to find descendents.  When Margaret died in New Zealand in 1943 Two nieces from Belfast in Ireland Mrs J Jackson and Mrs W Stevenson were noted as beneficiarys I would love to contact anyone who knows who these ladies were.  Back then of course women were known by their husbands names and even their christian names were not mentioned.

In the 1911 census for Shanoguestown I found two families, George and Martha Stephens with son William 14, and dau Anna 26 and Florrie 16.  I wonder if it is THIS William Stephens (rather than Stevenson) who is the husband of the above niece?
Also in this census I found Mathew and Jane Jackson also at Shanoguestown with 2 daughters although it stated they had 8 children living at the time of the census so maybe this is the Jackson family that the other niece married into?  I would love some help unravelling this mystery.  These are my late husband's  family and would love to get it sorted

thanks

  • Patsy,

I found John McIvor and Mary McMillen in the 1901 census. The townland is Islandbawn (mistranscribed on the census). That’s just next to Muckamore.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Antrim_Rural/Island_bane/915210/

On 20.5.1903 they had daughter Agnes born in Islandreagh (which is a mile or two away in Donegore).

    1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Antrim_Rural/Shaneoguestown/106780/

7 children to the marriage but 3 had died by 1911. So the only daughter alive in 1911 was Susan. I found a marriage for a Susan McIvor to William Stevenson on 24.2.1922 in Newtownabbey.  So that looks to be one of your nieces in the 1943 probate file.  You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

So there may not be any connection to the Stephens family in Shanoguestown. That may just be a coincidence.

Tracing the Stevenson family forward from 1922 will be hard to do on-line. It’s possible to search for children for them, but births less than 100 years old are not on-line and so you would need to get a researcher to look the records up using one of the terminals in GRONI or PRONI in Belfast (which do not have that time restriction). The family had presumably moved into Belfast by the 1940s. The street directories are in PRONI (in paper format) and so it might be possible to locate them using that resource. But either way you are probably looking at hiring a researcher to tie this up.

I couldn’t see Thomas & Fanny in the 1901 census but if you know where they were, let me know, and I’ll see if one of their daughters married a Jackson.

  • I did a bit more research on Thomas & Fanny. This looks to be Thomas in 1901 by which time he is a widower:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Antrim_Rural/Shanoguestown/915325/

    And then in 1911:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Antrim_Rural/Town_Parks__part_of__Rural/106590/

So that tells us Margaret Ann married John Scott.  So she’s not Mrs J. Jackson, so far as I can see. Fanny/Francis looks to have died in 1888 (aged 39), and as far as I can tell they only had 3 children, James, (8.9.1879) Margaret Ann (28.10.1882) & John  (25.11.1885). So Margaret was apparently the only daughter who might have married a Mr Jackson.

So don’t know who Mrs J. Jackson was, unless Margaret Ann was widowed post 1911 and then  remarried a Jackson. (I checked up to 1942 but did not see such a marriage).

  • Elwyn you have done so much thanks heaps.  Certainly looks like Susan McIvor could be the one I am looking for now just a case of doing the search.  Will keep digging you never know?

I appreciate very much the help.

    cheers from here

  • Hi Everyone,

I am researching Stewart McMullen/McMullan, who according to his enlistment papers in 1820 came from Grange of Muckamore.  He came out to Australia in 1822 as a convict guard with the 3rd Regiment of Foot and after his service ended he went to New Zealand in 1832 and built flour mills and sawmills in Northland and Waikato areas.

Stewart had one son in Australia and more than likely some illegitimate children in NZ up until 1852 when he died in Auckland.

I have been researching Stewart for 6 years now and have not found any information (including names) of his parents or siblings.

I have done DNA testing with Ancestry and FTDNA and would be super interested to know if by any chance any of the McMullen relatives linked to John and Nancy have been tested.  If so, please let me know the details as I would dearly love to trace the McMullen family back to Ireland.

    Looking forward to reaching out.
