History

Rathlin Castle which was also known as Bruce's Castle was built on Rathlin Island. In 1306 King Robert 1 of Scotland retired here for the winter after being defeated by Sir Aymer de Valence at the Battle of Methven.

The castle was attacked in July 1575 by Francis Drake and John Norrey with cannons and upon surrender of the garrison the island's residents were put to death by sword and this was known as the Rathlin Island Massacre.

In the sixth century a church was founded by St. Columba who placed it under the superintendence of St. Colman. In 790 Danish pirates descended upon the island and destroyed the monastery, which was soon thereafter restored. In 973 it was again destroyed by the Danes.

The soil is light and intermixed with basalt and limestone. The valleys are rich and well cultivated and a variety of rocky pastures are scattered over the whole island.

There are three public schools where about 180 children are educated.
