Hi there
My great grandfather born in 1838 in Armagh according to his marriage certificate and the 1881 census
was named James O' Neil his father born in Ireland was a John O'Neil. It is not certain whether this was
Armagh city or simply the county of Armagh. His son my grandfather was James Gordon O'Neil and my
father was Donald James O'Neil.James O'Neil and James Gordon O'Neil both saw service in the Royal
Artillery at Woolwich and Shoeburyness School of Gunnery in Essex. I visited Armagh in 2012 and hope
to return as soon as I can obtain some information as to their historic home. I don't know whether they
were a Catholic Anglican or Presbyterian family,so don't know where to start my enquiries.Any info
gratefully received.

Hi Janet
There is a record of the baptism of James O'Neill with father John in 1838 on www.rootsireland.ie/ (a site which charges)
I went through the parishes and found that it was SEAGOE RC

Some sites which you may want to have a look at are PRONI and geni.nidirect.gov.uk
