My great-great grandfather, DANIEL MALLAN, emigrated to the U.S. in 1840. He lived and worked for several years on the New York / Pennsylvania border as a watchman on the canal and then about 1857 migrated west to Minnesota. He married Harriet Twichell about 1844 in Pensylvania. His obituary says he was born in Armagh, Ireland in 1812. His death record gives the names of his parents as Robert and Anna. I have no other specific information on his origins in Ireland and don't know where to start looking.

  • Hi there,

It is quite difficult to start your research without having a more specific place of origin. There are a number of avenues you could start looking at.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

You could check the 1901 and 1911 census records here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ and see where/if any Mallan/Mallons lived in County Armagh. It might help to give you some indication of their whereabouts.

Here are some other records to try:

    • Valuation of Armagh town (heads of households). Parliamentary Papers 1837, Reports from Committees, Vol. II (1), Appendix G
    • (1803-31) Armagh Freeholders and Poll Books PRONI (Public Records of Northern Ireland) ARM 5/2/1-17, D 1928. Also the NLI (National Library of Ireland) Ir. 94116 a 1, Ir. 352 p 2
    • 1839 Valuation of Co. Armagh, NLI Pos. 99. Also Armagh Co. Library
    • 1840 Ratepayers for the Union of Armagh PRONI D/1670/13/6
    • 1840-55 Emigrants from Derrynoose to the US and Scotland; with parish registers. PRONI MIC.1/158
    • 1840- Wokhouse records: Armagh Union PRONI, BG/2, or the Church of Latter Day Saints Fim 259166-72; Castlebayney Union, (Monaghan Ancestry).

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
