Hi,

My th grandfather was John Gregory. Through process of elimination, sibling names and ages, I think he was the son of Thomas GREGORY and Margaret EARLY. I am trying to find out if any record of families or siblings all emigrating to South Africa might have been kept at parish or church level in Ireland. Or I am hoping to get in touch with family in Ireland who have a story passed down of family moving to South Africa. My John Gregory was a stone mason.

Thanks.

Michelle.

  • Michelle,

John Gregory was born 5.4.1868 at Rathkeelan, Crossmaglen. Here’s his birth cert:

Parents married 28.11.1861 in Killevy Upper parish, Co Armagh. Other children:

    Mary bapt 26.5.1863

    Mathew 23.5.1864

    Peter 17.6.1866

    Patrick 25.8.1869

    Lawrence 5.3.1871

    Anne 17.9.1873

    Thomas 17.7.1873

    Margaret 5.8.1875 born Drummuckavall, Crossmaglen.

You do occasionally see mention of people emigrating in church records but there was no regular system for recording such moves. At a wider level, officicaldom didn’t keep a record of who left Ireland. Such records that do exist are passenger lists and some immigration records at the country of arrival.

  • Thanks so much for your reply. I do have all that info already. And I have searched South Africa extensively but cannot find any arrivals etc.
