Looking to establish the origins of Charles William Lutton from the Belfast area of Northern Ireland, a protestant man that married a Roman Catholic woman, Margaret McBride, somewhere around 1833.  He sailed from Greenock, Scotland in September 1843 with his wife and three children to Australia.  Shipping records show his father's name as John Lutton and his mother Sarah Lutton and that they were living in County Down just before departure.  The records also show his native place as County Down and hers as County Antrim.

Suspected to be the brother of Andrew James Lutton, a wealthy landowner from Portadown, County Armagh who married a Sarah Porter in 1847.  He died in 1870.  His father was also a John Lutton.

The shipping records might state a more precise location for where they were from in Belfast. If not, you should consult the records stored at PRONI (Public Records of Northen Ireland). There might be early records available for counties Down and Antrim there.

    I think it might be worth checking further into the details of Andrew james Lutton. If this is family hearsay, be a little cautious. These types of memories can be inaccurate. However, there is no harm to check into it further. it might help to link the two families. You have a more precise location for Andrew - Portadown. This is great. Check the marriage records and death records.

    There is a list called: Persons entitled to vote. this is available at Armagh County Museum.It dates from 1851-73. D7. Also Church of Latter Day Saints, film no. 1279325.

    You could try looking at these trade directories:
