Hi, we have recently discovered that we have a connection to Loughgall through my great great great grandfather. Military records state that Hugh Trainer came from Loughgall and was born in about 1795 but that is all we have. I would love to know if we have more ancestors from the area or if we jumped from Scotland to Ireland and then back to Scotland.
Any help would be gratefully received. We think his dad was called Charles. Hugh was a trumpeter for the inniskilling dragoons married a lass from Glasgow and had five children but information about them is patchy.

You don’t say what denomination Hugh was. I looked in the 1901 census. The name can be spelled various ways eg Trainor, Trayner etc, and can vary all the time. But altogether there were about 180 in the county of which about 160 were RC. The remainder were mostly Church of Ireland. No Presbyterians.
If the family were RC then the Loughgall baptism & marriage records only start in 1835. If Church of Ireland then the records start in 1706 (with some gaps). There’s a copy of the Church of Ireland records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit is required to view them. I don’t know if they are on-line anywhere.
There aren’t a lot of records for the 1700s in Ireland and so the church records might be about all there is to find, unless the family happened to be wealthy or noteworthy. (Most weren’t).
