I'm exploring my Cowan family ancestors and would like to connect and share family information and dates with other Cowans that are of my same lineage. My paternal, great-grandmother was Grace Cowen and her grandparents were John Cowan and Mary Jane Savage, both born in Armagh County, Ireland, and immigrated to Canada via Quebec. The family moved from Quebec to Ontario, with many some homesteading in Manitoba. My great-grandmother, Grace Cowen was born in the USA, in one of the Dakota's. Her family returned to Manitoba, to be near her father's family, when she was a school girl. She later married and lived in Outlook, Saskatchewan, where my grandmother, Ivy Emily Routledge, and her siblings were born, she being the first girl born, and the second child in her family. After WWI her family emigrated to Seattle, USA, where she married and bore my dad and uncle. My dad married and he and my mom had we three daughters. I immigrated to British Columbia in 1974 and became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1977.

  • How certain are you that Grace Cowan’s parents were John Cowan & Mary Ann Savage? What’s your source for this information? I ask because there are several trees on Ancestry which name her parents as Edward Cowan 1839 – 1921 and Mary Emily Hemstreet 1861 -1907.  Grace’s place of birth is given as Codington, South Dakota in 1887, she married William Routledge in 1905 and died in Seattle in 1982.  Edward’s place of birth is given variously as Canada and Ireland. Mary’s is given as Russia.

I don’t see a marriage in Ireland for John Cowan and Mary Ann Savage 1845 onwards, though it would help to know when, roughly, they were born or married and what denomination they were. (Your information is a bit short on dates).

  • Hello Elwyn and Happy St Patrick's Day to you,

Are you related to the Cowans? What you've read was my first time posting on this website so it was vague as to dates and other details until such time as someone was interested. Thanks for your interest and enquiry!

Yes, as my post states, "my paternal, great-grandmother was Grace Cowen and her grandparents were John Cowan and Mary Jane Savage, both born in Armagh County, Ireland".

My information is from Ancestry and confirmed by Cowan relative in Manitoba, Canada, through finding her on the Find-A-Grave website. I've attached a photo of the grave stone of Edward Cowen which I recall was from the Find-A-Grave site.

Great-Grandma Routeledge was born and her parents were as you have indicated. I believe Edward was born in Canada, possibly Quebec, but I don't have information about Mary.

I think I have a few details about John Cowan's birth date, etc, so will send it on to you soon.

I will also email my Cowan cousin about marriage dates for John and Mary.

To close, I would be like to know your own connection and interest in the John and Mary Jane Cowan family lineage.

    Most sinserely,

    Janet in BC, Canada

ps I have wedding photos of both Grace (Cowan) and William Routeledge as well as that of Ivy Emily (Routeledge) and Raymond Lehde, my paternal, great-grandparents, and my grandparents, my father's parents.

  • Janet,

I am not connected to these families. I am a volunteer for Ireland Reaching Out, based in Co. Antrim. My role is to help you find any relevant records in Ireland. As mentioned previously I don’t see any marriage in Ireland, 1845 onwards, for John Cowan and Mary Ann Savage but I’ll wait any additional information you can provide.
