I am trying to trace the family of Edward MATCHETT married in Milltown 3 May 1860 to Jane KELLY. Edward's father was Richard MATCHETT and Jane's father was John KELLY. Any help on Edward and Jane's families would be appreciated.

Edward and Jane emigrated to South Africa at some point and Edward is buried there.

Thanks.

I have Irish ancestry that I have struggled to discover - just family rumours and echoes from the past. Maybe this time the luck of the Irish will be with me!?!

Apologies for the very long delay in getting back to you,

Have you had a look at rootsireland.ie to see if there is any mention of the family in their records? It is a subscription site but you can join for a short period and search for a Matchett-Kelly marriage, then any baptisms for children born to the couple as well as any siblings of Edward and Jane. If you can find them on the Griffith's Valuation you may be able to track them through the Valuation records on the PRONI website, details below:

    Griffith's Valuation: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

    PRONI: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/searching-valuation-revision-books

  • Hi Clare

Many thanks for the tips. I have checked out Griffith's Evaluation and have found a few potential matches. All are centred around Tataraghan Church and my guess is that baptismal records may be found there. How do I go about researching these baptismal records?

    Regards, Andrea

  • You can search baptism records on familysearch.org for free or through Rootsireland.ie. The latter is a subscription site but you can now subscribe for as little as 24 hours. As you know the area you want to focus on you could also have a look on registers.nli.ie for free to see if the digitised copies are available there (if the family were Roman Catholic).

    All the best
