At age 22, Alexander Walker emigrated to Australia in 1863 on the Fearnought. He plied his trade as a draper in the gold fields of NE Victoria. Looking at the ship's original manifest, Alexander may have traveled with a friend Thomas Sloane aged 18. Alexander's marriage and death records from the state of Victoria indicate he was from Newry, Ireland and that his parents were William Walker and Mary Jane Thistle. The records conflict in one area; in one document William is listed as a draper by trade but the other record has William as a grocer. Alexander married twice in Beechworth Victoria. His second marriage to Kate Kemp in 1883 was in the Presbyterian church . I am looking for possible Walker & Thistle connections in Ireland

I have quite a bit about this family.
The Thomas Sloane that Alexander Walker travelled with was his half brother. Their mother was married 3 times and had multiple children from each marriage.
I can post some more details if anybody is researching this family.

There were a number of Walker families in the Newry area, likely related to the large Walker clan from the Richhill area with three of George Walker's and Mary Greenlee's children from Richhill area moving to Newry in the mid 1700's. Other Walkers from the Richhill clan later moved to the Newry area, on both the Armagh and Down County sides.
