My 3rd gr-grandfather, Joseph James Dougan was born in Newtownhamilton, I believe in 1816 (not sure).  His brother Henry was born in Feb, 1821, in Newry.  Joseph changed the spelling of his name to Dugan after coming to the U.S.  He married Sarah Kerr, daughter of Joseph Kerr and Janie Clement on Jan 19, 1846 in Newtownhamilton before leaving for Canada where they were in St. Johns, New Brunswick in 1847.  Joseph and Henry also had a sister Margaret, born in 1810 who married a man named McWiggin.

Sarah Kerr had a sister named Mary who married a man named Runnette.  I suspect the Dougan, Kerr and Runnette families may have known each other prior to leaving Ireland.

  • Dear ljorgange:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

The Roots Ireland database has the church marriage record transcription for the marriage of Joseph Dougan to Sarah Kerr and it notes that Joseph's father's name was Robert Dougan.

It may also have other information and you might consider taking a look at this database.  It is subscription, but you can pay for it on a day basis.

In addition, you might want to look at the PRONI website which may have some useful genealogy sources for you.  That link is below:
