I have lots of information but not some I'd like to have.

My great grandfather, John Henry McGinn (Magin, Maginn), married Margaret McGinn 4 Feb 1858 at Cullyhanna Catholic church in County Armagh.

John Henry was born about 1817 "in or near Newtownhamilton" according to his army discharge records. He served in thee British Army in India. Retired from 52nd Reg't of Foot and was a Chelsea Pensioner. He had an older brother Peter (b.d. 1815) Who also seved in India. I haven't been able to find his discharge record possibly from 39th Reg't of Foot.

Margaret, duaghter of Owen, was born 6 Apr 1833 according to U. S. records. She had four brothers (I don't know their first names) who were schoolteachers. Thanks to them she was able to read and write. I have a possible baptismal record for n Owen Mcginn From Upper Creggan RC parish (Prents= Thomas Magin & MAry Havey).

They had four sons:   Patrick b.d.  25 Feb 9859    b.p.  ?

Thomas   Bap  24 Mar 1860  Cullyhanna, County Armagh RC Church

James   b.d. 10 May 1863   Gateshead. Durham, England

                                  Hugh    .b d. 26 Dec 1865    Detroit, Wayne, Michigan

The family moved to Gateshead 1861-62.   Then emigrated to The U.S. in 1863 through New York to Michigan.

I'm interested in finding parents of John and Margaret,. birth date and place of Patrick, and discharge information on Peter. Quite a request I know, but any little scrap of Info might lead o greatertings.

I have checked: Tithe,Griffith's, 1901&1911 Censuses, British Army records, RC Registers.nli, Chelsea Pensioners.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I have not been successful in a search for a baptism for John Henry or for Patrick (or a marriage through the early marriage index without success). Have you been in touch with the National Archives in Kew in relation to any available discharge papers for Peter?

  • Hello:

Members of our McGinn families appear to have been in the same relatively small area in Newtown Hamilton Civil Parish in County Armagh.

My Great-Great-Grandparents James McGinn (b.abt.1800) and his wife Sarah (b. abt.1805) (maiden name unknown) and their children Edward (b. abt. 1830) (my great grandfather), Ann (b. abt. 1833), Bernard (b. abt. 1839), James (b.abt. 1846), and Margaret (b. abt. 1845), first appeared in the U.S. in the 1850 census for Kingston, Ulster County NY.

Bernard’s Gravestone in Sawkill, Ulster County NY says he was “a native of the Townland of Camley, County Armagh, Ireland”.  There are two adjoining Townlands in County Armagh: Camley (McCullagh) and Camley (Ball), both in the Newtown Hamilton Civil Parish and located just east of Dundalk Road (Road A-29), near its intersection with Cullyhanna Road.

You note that you had McGinn ancestors John Henry, Owen, Patrick, Thomas, James, and Hugh.

PRONI has a will index showing a Bernard McGinn, a farmer, in Camley McCullagh in 1823 and 1825, a Henry McGinn in Camolly McCullagh in 1819, and a Patrick McGinn in Camly McCullagh in 1818

Griffith’s Valuation lists  Hugh Macken in Camly (Ball) and Owen McGinn, Hugh McGinn, and John McGinn in Camly )Macullagh). Not far to the west in Tullyvallen (Hamilton) East is William Macken, and in Tullyvallen are 2 Patrick McGinns and a Thomas McGinn.

The Tithe Applotments list Art Macken, John Maginn, John Roe. Maginn, Widow McGinn, and Willm. McGinn in Camoly McCullough; and Henry Maginn, Michl. Maginn, and Pady McGinn in Tullyvalen Hamilton.

The 1796 Flax Grower’s List includes Bryan, Henry and John McGinn in the Newtown Hamilton Civil Parish.

Additionally, two physical features show up on Griffith’s Maps:  McGinn’s Bridge on Dundalk Road just south of its intersection with Cullyhannah Road and McGinn’s Rocks, appearing to be a quarry, about 1 mile south of that intersection on Cullyhanna Road.

Given this possible close proximity in Ireland, I am wondering if you, any of your siblings, or descendants, or forebearers, have done any genealogical DNA testing.  I have, and, if any of your McGinn family has, it would be interesting to see if there is any genetic connection.

  • Hello,

My ancestor, Mary McGinn b. 28 Sep 1825 Ireland, married James McShane b. Abt 1820 Ireland. They came to the U.S. and settled in Ohio, where their first child Margaret was born in 1847. I descend from Margaret, who married James McMahon. The McMahon's lived in Newtownhamilton. The McShane's were from Crossmaglen. I don't have much information on my McGinn's. Hopefully this thread will lead to a connection. Here is what I have:

Daniel McGinn b. Ireland m. Bridget

daughter: Mary McGinn b. 28 Sep 1825 Ireland, d. 29 March, 1900 Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, U.S. m. James McShane, children: eleven. Names: Margaret, John, Vincent, Mary, Daniel, Ann, James, Ellen, Elizabeth, Thomas, David.

I have done DNA testing, as well as my family members including cousins. I look forward to connecting with McGinn relatives.

Regards, Donna in the U.S., with my heart in Ireland.
