Searching for descendants or family of James McDonel (McDonald) born 1797 and his wife Mary Walsh born 1802 both born in Borris and married 16 October 1825.  At some point they moved to Muine Bheag before they set sail for Canada.

    The subscription site Roots Ireland has seven baptismal records for children of James McDonald and Mary Walsh from 1830-1844. Do you have these records? Did the entire family emigrate?

    Thank you for your kind response.  No I don't have the children's baptismal information.

    I have not as yet proven exactly who came to Canada but it appears that they did come as a family.  I have them both, James and Mary and the following children, James born 2 Aug 1831;  Martin born 15 November 1837, Elizabeth born March 1838, Margaret  born 11 July 1844 and Mary born 11 July 1844 (twins).  I've heard they left Ireland in 1856 so it is possible that there were other children (given the gap in birth years) and some stayed behind and some I have been unable to trace to date.

    I believe that James was the son of John McDonald and Kitty Bulger and Mary was the daughter of Thomas Walsh and Elizabeth Gaul.

    I hope this helps and I appreciate any additional information out could provide.

    again, thank you so very much for your kind assistance

  • Susan:

    Roots Ireland has James baptized August 2 1830 John baptized December 7 1834 Marian September 11 1836 Anne May 1 1839 Bridget September 12 1841  Mary July 7 1844 Margaret July 21 1844  Possibly Marian died young. They lived in Dunleckny.

    The register in 1844 was faint but I believe Mary and Margaret were baptized on July 7   https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634458#page/15/mode/1up

    So you have a Martin and Elizabeth which I did not locate and I found some records that you did not list.

  • I’m checking with a few “cousins to see for other names. But Martin I’m sure of as I am his direct descendant.

  • Hi Sue:  I am wondering if your James and My John McDonald are siblings, or at least cousins?  In Griffiths, John McDonnell is in Garryhill, Dunleckny.  His eldest son is James.  And there is a James McDonald in Garryhill in the Tithe Applotment Books, that I think may  be my John's father.  Do you have a DNA test done?  Or do you know of any siblings for James?

    Hi Mary Beth,

    I did do my DNA through Ancestry. My user name on the site  is Renfrewsue.

    My James was said to have had the following siblings (with their spouses in brackets) but I have yet to prove any of that information with supporting documentation. David (Mary Lowtoh) John (Mary Franell) William (Biddy Cahill), Patrick (Catherine Headon), Andrew (Betty Kennedy) and Thomas (Alicia Nolan).  I'm told he was the only son who came to Canada.  The others remained in Ireland.

    Please let me know if I can share anything else with you that could link our families.

  • Hi Sue ,

    Was just browsing and found your post .

    See from Dunleckney Register that the address given on their marriage looks very likely to be Bohermore ;

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634457#page/97/mode/1up

    From looking at Bagenalstown/Dunleckney Parish records transcription (link below) the following seem to be children baptised to the couple;

    Margaret 22 February 1826

    Martin 10 July1827

    Margaret 19 April 1829

    James 2 August 1830

    Andy 28 October 1832

    John 7 December 1834

    Maria X September 1836

    Anne X May 1839

    Bridget 2 September 1841

    Mary 7 July 1844

    There were McDonalds living in Bohermore up to c.50 years ago and descendents have a tree on Ancestry .I remember emailing one person a few times regarding the family some years ago .Not sure if they are the same family as you are looking for though .

    The name Gaul was associated with that area as well as Gauls hill was (is ) just outside Bagenalstown on the road to Bohermore .Perhaps a mile or so between them .

    Not sure if the above is of any help to you .Found that tree on Ancestry .The person seems to be descended from William McDonald  c.1800 - 1862 and they have "your " James as his brother .
