I'm searching for the families of my 3x Great Grandparents James TRAINOR,Farmer,(C1793- possibly 1883?) and Margaret CLARKE,(1795-1839) from the Knockbride/Bailieborough area of Co.Cavan.They had 3 children that I know of, (although there could have been more,) John (1813-1894), Anthony(1814-1879),and my 2x Great Grandmother,Anne,(1819-1909),who all emigrated to Australia, arriving in late 1841.
I would love to find the parents of James Trainor, his siblings and any other children that he and his wife Margaret may have had.(I'm thinking that he may have had other children because he stayed behind in Co.Cavan when 3 of his children emigrated.)
I would also love to find out more about Margaret Clarke-parents and siblings.
I have looked through the Griffith's Valuations but there are over 60 entries
for Clarke in Knockbride alone, so I just don't know where to start!!
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Margot,
I would love to be able to help you, alas civil registration did not start until 1864.
I too have Clarkes in my family & O'Reillys & I know the frustration in picking & choosing & I err on the side of caution unless something proves right. Trainors may the be easiest route & then people did marry their neighbours & still do. Is there anyway we can identify a townland, this would be the name given to the collection of fields that they lived in, a bit like a street, Knockbride & Bailieborough would be civil & religious parish names. Do you have any certificates, that you cant make sense of? Were there any priests in the family?, as they are well documented.

Hi Carmel,
Thank you so much for your quick reply.I don't have any Irish certificates for these families-most of my information has come from the NSW and Victorian Passenger Shipping Lists, and the family birth, marriage and death certificates from Australia etc. There are a few priests in the family but they all are from later generations in Australia,so no help there.
I did look pretty closely at the Griffiths Valuations and found a James Traynor in Drummeva,Knockbride in 1857 which looked quite promising.Anne Trainor, (1819-1909),daughter of Patrick and Margaret, listed her place of origin as Knockbride,Co.Cavan.Her brother Anthony who emigrated to NSW with her in Nov.1841 on the ship the "Albatross", listed his place of origin as Bailieborough.(They never list the Townlands.)
Drummeva,Knockbride had several entries for members of the Traynor family-Nicholas,John,2 for Patrick, and the one for James.(I know that James was still alive in 1841 when his 3 children emigrated to Australia, but their mother Margaret had died in 1839.)
The same group of entries leasing houses, offices and land from George Waring in Drummeva had several Clarkes listed also- 2 for Patrick,John and Conner. This leads me to suspect that Drummeva was in fact the right Townland, but I have no proof.Furthermore,on the NSW Passenger Shipping Lists for Anthony and Anne,Richard Clarke of Bailieborough and Patrick Clarke of Dromuselin have both vouched for their good characters,so there may be a connection with their mother Margaret there.
Perhaps this information will act as a stepping stone to more knowledge? I live in hope.
Thank you once again for your help.
Margot.

Hi Margot,
I think that to narrow it down further, the best thing to look for is James Trainors death cert, hopefully it is registered & if we get it, it would say who the informant is & if we are lucky, it is a son or a daughter in law or even a grand child, we then would know who was alive with him & follow their trail down Had you searched for it? if not I have access to Ancestry.com & I will try, just let me know..

Hi Carmel,
Thank you for that great suggestion. I have found 2 possible deaths for James, the first one I found was on Ancestry where I'm a member. It was in the first quarter of 1883,registered in Carrickmacross (which I think is fairly close to Drummeva/Knockbride/ Bailieborough area) where he died aged 90. I'm really hoping that it's this one as it fits nicely into the time frame for his birth date etc.I also found a Patrick Clarke in Drummeva in the Griffiths Valuation records which was interesting, and could potentially be another piece to slot into the puzzle, but I'm not assuming anything yet.(He might be the same Patrick Clarke who vouched for Anne and Anthony's characters on the NSW Shipping records in 1841.)
I also found another record from Roots from memory for a death of James Traynor in 1852 in Co.Cavan but I haven't checked it out yet. I probably need to top up my account so that I can access more records on Roots as I find out more information, but I will start with the other record first, and see what that brings up.I am fairly sure that I can obtain it through my local Genealogical society where I'm a member.
Many thanks for your help once again,Carmel. It is really helpful to get some guidance to be steered in the right direction to find my ancestors. I really appreciate it!!
Kind regards,
Margot.

Hi Margot,
While Carrickmacross may not be too far away from Knockbride, to register a death in 1883 it would be too far to go to register a death, though not impossible, search from 1841 forward & perhaps order the cert for Patrick Clarke, at least it will either eliminate him or open possibilities, you would see if he was married/widowed/unmarried. I will try and see if anyone else was looking for similar family, but it will take me until next week to do that.

Hi Carmel,
I was unable to order the certificate for James Traynor through my local AIGS so will do it through PRONI.Apparently you can order certificates online through there.Hopefully it will be of some help.
Thank you very much for your help to date.I have told everyone on Genes Reunited what a great site this is!!

Margot.

Hi Carmel,
I'm not too sure about obtaining records from the GRO from here, but I could email the library at Cavan and find out what sort of services they offer, fees etc.
Otherwise I will just see what records are available at my local AIGS, and Roots Ireland etc.
Thank you for your help.
Margot.
