I am trying to find any family of my great grandfather James Joseph Clarke, born around 1863 to Mathew and Mary (Curran) Clarke in Bailieboro, Cavan, who might still be in Cavan.  Or any relatives? I think that James Joseph had brothers and sisters who I think were Thomas, Bernard and Rosie.  I don't know if there were others.  Thomas and Mathew settled in the San Francisco California, USA area and had families.  Any help or contact would be deeply appreciated.  thank you.

Sincerely,

Diana Wild

  • Hi Diana,

If you google Irish phone book you will get eircom on which you can search Residential for Clarke Cavan.

There are a couple in Bailleborough.

If you go to find my parish at the top of this page and enter Ulster Cavan Baliieborough for province county and parish you will get Bailleborough and can leave your message there too if you haven't done so already.

  • Hi Diane,

I will try to help you, Clarkes are very plentiful, in this area & I was wondering did you have a townland that they may have come from.  On the other hand Curran is not as common & I have seen Curran on the headstones in Moybologue Graveyard, which is about 4 or 5 mile from Bailieborough on the Meath border.

If James Joseph Clarke was born in 1863, you should be able to get his Baptism records, Civil Registeration started in 1864 & if any of his siblings were born after that, I would concentrate on them.

When did  or did James Joseph emigrate?

There are 13 James Clarkes in 1901 Census, you can see them here & there may be more, if any variant spellings are looked at

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm Or you might try Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) which will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the familymay have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation).

You could also try contacting the Cavan Co Library for further assistance.
