I am traveling to Ireland in the near future and would like to retrieve copies of original documents.  My great, great grandmother Margaret Mulhall and my great, great grandfather Patrick Leonard were married on Nov 11, 1865 (one year prior to coming to the USA) in Doonane, Queens, Ireland.  I am assuming that this is where my great, great grandmother lived.  How can I obtain a copy of their marriage documents?  Also, how can I determine where they were born (Margaret approximately 1843 and Patrick approximately 1838).  Margaret's fathers name was Jeremiah Mulhall and Patrick's fathers name was Patrick Leonard.  Margaret and Patrick did not have any children until they arrived in the USA.  I would like to obtain copies of birth records as well.  Thanks to anyone who can help.  Audrey

    Not sure how soon you are coming over. Below is the civil marriage index record for Margaret and Patrick. You can write to the General Register Office and get a copy for around 4 euros. I provided instructions below the index record. If you are going over very soon and will be in Dublin, you can stop at the GRO office there. ( When you mail a request, you send it to GRO in Roscommon town. I'm not sure if the Roscommon office allows walk-ins).

    Civil registration started in 1864 so you won't find a civil birth record for Margaret and Patrick. Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has Church records but depending which parish they lived in they may or may not be available. Roots is a pay site to view the transcription from the church record.

     Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

    Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you will be able to get their marriage certificate from www.groireland.ie.  This is the General Register Office.  Go online and fill out their form.

    You will not be able to get a birth certificate as the period is too early, but if the records are there you will be able to get a baptismal record.

    I have tried looking for a birth record for Margaret but I can't seem to find one.   I have also looked for Patrick but there are 141 Patrick Leonards with Patrick named as fathers!!
